Most student athletes coming in as freshmen from high school spend their first year trying to acclimate to their team, hoping to contribute in some way. Any way. Setter Matt Stork is no ordinary freshman, however, as he has proved this season in leading the No. 2 CSUN men's volleyball team to the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament Thursday against No. 3 Pepperdine.

The No. 2 Matadors men's volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament after hard-fought 3-1 win over sixth-seeded BYU Saturday at the Matadome. The victory matches CSUN up' against Pepperdine on Thursday for a spot in the MPSF Championship game.

After going 16-6 in league, the No. 2 Matadors men's volleyball team now gets ready for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament. Northridge goes into the tourney as the third seed after finishing behind No. 3 Pepperdine and No. 1 UC Irvine in the standings. They will host BYU on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be blogged live at the Matador Score.

All-American Eric Vance ended his regular-season career on a high note. The fourth-year player helped the Matadors to a 3-0 weep of UCSB Friday night. Vance, however, is hoping his career can be extended all the way to a national championship.

According to many ESPN.com NBA experts, the Most Valuable Player this season is as easy a pick as 1-2-3. Seventeen out of 18 analysts selected the Cavaliers' Lebron James for the award while Miami's Dwyane Wade received the other lone first-place vote. An almost-unanimous pick is a bit offline, especially with the 2008-09 season Wade and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant have had.

Matadors heading the wrong way

It was a bittersweet weekend for the No. 3 Matadors men's volleyball team as they split a pair of matches against No. 10 UC San Diego and No. 8 Long Beach State. The 3-1 Friday victory over the Tritons clinched the third spot in the upcoming Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament. The good feeling didn't last long as the Matadors dropped their next game, 3-1, to the 49ers on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.

A bit of d'eacute;j'agrave; vu took place on April fool's day as No. 2 Pepperdine defeated the No. 3 CSUN men's volleyball team 3-2 at the Matadome. Earlier this season, the Matadors had upended the Waves on the road 3-2 after winning the first two sets and then surviving a rally to escape with the five-set win.
