CSUN Catholics celebrate Ash Wednesday today

William Kammer February 21, 2007
Ash Wednesday is a Catholic holiday that represents the first day of Lent, which is the 40 days and 40 nights out of the year in which some Catholics give up certain things in their life they enjoy. The ash that some Catholics choose to put on their foreheads today represents the fact that "we started out as dust and we will become dust," said Norma Aceves, head of the Catholic Newman organization on campus.

Sticks and stones . . . but words will never hurt me

William Kammer December 15, 2006
Imagine a society where we are not allowed to talk about the president. We can't talk about abortion or war. Because of the fear of offending people or the fear of a violent uprising, we don't talk about politics, and there is no way we could possibly talk about religion.

Primus whips crowd into frenzy at Hollywood Palladium

William Kammer December 14, 2006
The Primus concert at the Hollywood Palladium on Dec. 6th was what most of the crowd expected it to be: An energetic musical experience with a variety of very unique and powerful musicians. "It's hard to say, but you know L.A. is definitely always one of the craziest places (to play)," said Larry Lelonde, the guitarist for Primus.

Groups come together

William Kammer November 20, 2006
For centuries, the Muslim and Jewish communities have been at each other's throats. The fundamental differences between the two groups have been the cause of wars, violence and hatred on a very large scale. However, during the last two weeks at CSUN, members of both communities came together to discuss the causes and history between the two religions.

William Kammer November 16, 2006
The Freshman Connection, a 1-year-old CSUN program directed toward first-time freshmen, had an event in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union yesterday. The flyer for the event said, "Come celebrate your first semester at CSUN!" Each of the 299 students who are part of the Freshman Connection this year were supposed to participate in the event, which displayed presentations from classes within the program, said Cheryl Spector, Director of Academic First Year Experiences at CSUN.

William Kammer October 26, 2006
With one university-wide exit exam already in place-the upper-division writing proficiency exam-the highest levels of government are discussing ways to improve academic assessment, which may include more exit exams for universities such as CSUN. Federal government officials have discussed the ways to improve the nation's universities.

Americans can no longer play online poker

William Kammer October 24, 2006
A little over a week ago George W. Bush and his administration snuck another law by the American people. The law took away rights of Americans, and there was nothing the American people could do about it. Forget that he did it without telling us. Forget that he did it in a non-democratic way, without a public vote.

William Kammer October 12, 2006
On Saturday night in downtown Los Angeles people took to the streets and surrounded City Hall. Blocks were shut down around the L.A. Times and official city buildings. It was reported that 15,000 people showed up on that night. No major violence occurred on Saturday, but there was yelling, screaming, banging, crashing, spinning, beat-boxing and Beck.

Campus moves toward lowering greenhouse gases

William Kammer October 10, 2006
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a law on Sept. 27 that caps the amount of man-made greenhouse gases that California can produce. CSUN is already helping reduce these emissions by using alternative energy, which includes creating a megawatt producing hydrogen fuel cell on campus.

Human rights of the citizens

William Kammer October 10, 2006
President Bush and his administration are taking away more human rights all the time, and even when the justice system tries to stop them, they keep fighting. A week ago an appeals court ruled that the government's warrantless wiretapping could continue as they appeal a judge's ruling which stated that such acts were unconstitutional.

Preacher riles up students

William Kammer October 9, 2006
Do Not Fear Hell" was written on the bottom of Paul Mitchell's sign when he spoke to CSUN students about what he believes is the horrible fate they will face if they stay on the religious path they are currently on. "If you're acting stupid, I'll say you're acting stupid," said the 64-year-old Mitchell as he preached his message.

New program aims to protect students’ laptops from theft

William Kammer October 3, 2006
While standing at a payphone, a 13-year-old boy tried to call for a ride when he arrived at the Burbank Airport. No one was there to greet him when he arrived, so he set his bag down and set his laptop on top of the bag before he picked up the phone. The boy looked away from his bag for a second, and when he looked back the laptop was gone.
