One of the key themes of the Bush's foreign policy is the promotion of freedom and democracy across the globe. This idea was reiterated to the American public during his State of the Union speech. To the lay American public, democracy means the freedom to choose and the freedom to vote for whoever you believe is best fit for the position at hand.

BSU warns of health risks

The CSUN Black Student Union and campus officials are looking to raise awareness about health issues with African-American students. The BSU created a pamphlet to inform students about the dangers of diabetes, high blood pressure, sickle cell disease, cancer, HIV/AIDS and STDs to African-Americans.

Matadors bounce back from defeat, crush Hawaii

Bouncing back from a laborious defeat at the hands of conference rival Long Beach State, the Cal State Northridge women's tennis team crushed the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 7-0 Feb. 20 at the Northridge Tennis Complex. The first point went to the Matadors, as positions one through three each eliminated their opponents with relative ease.

CSUN financial aid fair explains money matters to students

Matador Dollar Day was held Feb. 15 to provide CSUN students with information regarding financial aid, money management and credit-card debt. "Students get a $20,000 loan on their credit card to get the hottest car - just look in the parking lot - but will not borrow from the student loans office, which has a much low-interest rate," said Lili Vidal, associate director of the Financial Aid Department.

New CSUN science building gets go-ahead

The CSU Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new 90,000 square foot building for the College of Science and Mathematics, CSUN officials said. The construction of the building is scheduled to begin in January 2007 and will be added to expand the College of Science and Mathematics educational objectives, said Bill Fairchild, capital programs manager and project manager of the new building.

CSUN receives no love in loss to British Columbia

The Cal State Northridge baseball team fell to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 9-3 in an exhibition game held on Feb.14 at Matador Field. The loss had no effect on the Matadors' record, which remained 6-3, because it was an exhibition game.

CSUN loses to 49ers and Cardinals over the weekend

The 19th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team dropped both games over the weekend to the seventh- ranked Long Beach State 49ers and the third-ranked Stanford Cardinals. Sophomore 2 meter's Allison Brookes and Christine Cruz each scored three goals in the match, but Long Beach State managed to come back and edge out the Matadors 11-10, in overtime.

Football field converted for track

The field formally used by the CSUN football team, left desolate since the university abandoned the program in 2001, is being reconfigured for use by the Track and Field team for hammer throw and discus, said Colin Donahue, director of Facilities Planning.

CSUN student dies after car crash

Amy Catherine Rebman, graduate communications student, died at the age of 22 on Feb. 8. A tragic car accident in Burbank claimed her life last week. She was born on April 24, 1983. Rebman left behind her parents, Brian and Denise; her sister, Sara; her grandparents, Bruce Rebman and Muriel Granier; along with many other family and friends.

Matadors get tenth win, hang on to beat UC Davis

After losing three of their last four games, the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team beat UC Davis 75-69 for their tenth victory of the season and their second over the Aggies, Feb.14 at the Pavilion in Davis. With the win, the Matadors improved their record to 10-12 overall and stayed 3-7 in conference.

Compartmentalizing the musical influences of African-Americans can be done succinctly through a historical perspective. Artists challenged social norms and laid the path for musical and social progression.
