Same-sex couples should be allowed to adopt

Religious groups and state courts are struggling with the issue of same-sex couples adopting children. The Roman Catholic bishops in Massachusetts are seeking an exemption from state anti-bias laws to allow the church to bar same-sex couples from adopting through its social service agencies, while in another state, if my memory serves me right, a judge ruled that the state could not deny a foster care license to a lesbian couple.

Gay couples wonder if ‘I do’ will ever be legal

In the five years they have known each other, 18-year-old Sarah McIlvaine and Autumn Benson dated, committed to a long-term relationship and began to talk about living together, but now wonder if they will ever be allowed to actually get married. This is because California has only recognized unions between a man and a woman, and voters reiterated this when they approved Proposition 22 in 2000.

Same-sex marriage still mostly illegal in U.S.

Despite the many attempts to challenge laws banning same-sex marriages, the U.S. Supreme Court has yet to rule on the constitutionality of the topic and set a nationwide precedent, said Christopher Shortell, professor of the Political Science Department. Shortell, who teaches courses in constitutional law and judicial process, said that marriage has been held to be a state right, and that is why much of the litigation challenging the traditional definition of marriage has been state-focused.

A.S. Senate doubles money given to Black Graduation Committee

The Associated Students Senate doubled the amount of money to be given toward a black graduation ceremony at its April 4 meeting. The Black Graduation Committee hosts a graduation ceremony for black students each year and members were told at the March 28 A.

LGBTA to hold ‘Day of Silence’ for violence victims

The CSUN Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender Alliance will hold an event called "Day of Silence" aimed to bring awareness about violence committed against homosexuals, transsexuals and bisexuals. The event was created to acknowledge that violence against homosexuals still happens, said Thomas Gudino, President of LGBTA.

On Friday, March 31 we celebrated Caesar Chavez by closing the campus. In the last few days, we have also noticed thousands of students walking out of class to protest attempts to "further restrict" illegal immigration into this country (or to use the PC term-undocumented immigration).

Online election for A.S.

The 2006 Associated Students online election began April 4 for the positions of A.S. president, vice president, and senators. Students can only vote online for the candidates and the vote count is scheduled to end today at 8 p.m., said Stephen Vanover, A.

SAT scoring errors worry prospective CSUN students

Only a few prospective CSUN students had SAT scores that were incorrectly scored by the college board, said a CSUN official. Eric Forbes, director of Admissions and Records at CSUN, said about six applicants were affected by the scoring errors, but the score discrepancy was not drastic enough to affect their admission to the university.

Professors, both current and past, and alumni want to both strive for office and inspire students to work for political change. Gabriel Buelna, Chicano/a studies professor and CSUN alumnus, said the inspiration to run for state Assembly came from his daughter.
