CSUN vocal jazz place first, win big in Reno

The CSUN vocal jazz ensemble placed first in their category among the four-year colleges performing at the 44th annual Reno Jazz Festival last weekend. The festival was held at the University of Nevada and is one of the largest of its kind in the country.

Coachella desert music festival attracts massive crowds, musicians

Thousands of tents aligned in grids on a large polo field filled quickly Friday evening. For those camping, the Coachella Music and Art Festival was more of a four-day escapist desert fantasy than a simple festival. The tents went up one by one, and soon looked more like an upper-class refugee camp than vacationers.

Learning nothing has never been so expensive

Just before I graduated from high school, I won a minor scholarship. One woman on the panel told me afterward that one anecdote put me over the edge from the hopefuls to the winners of the scholarship. I had told the panel about this nearly-forgotten story from the sixth grade; long ago then, prehistoric times now.

Campus looks great, but students can’t graduate

The time it takes a CSUN student to graduate averages out to roughly six years. That is a little bit more than half a decade, so most of the CSUN students have seen the campus change over time. It has been five years since I first stepped onto this campus and I still have another semester to go before I can graduate from this university.

On April 28-29, the Cal State Northirdge men and women's track teams participated in the Steve Scott Invitational located in the UC Irvine Stadium. It was the Matadors' final chance to tune up their performances before the Big West Championship, which will begin May 6.

Few surprises highlighted the draft

Last weekend's NFL draft saw few major surprises on the first day after the Houston Texans announced early that they had already come to a contract agreement with North Carolina State's defensive end Mario Williams as the number one overall pick. USC running back Reggie Bush looked like a sure bet to go number one at first, but after not accepting the offer from the Texans before the draft he fell into the lap of the New Orleans Saints who were quick to snag him with the number two pick.

Students shed light on homeless animals

Several CSUN students organized an event to bring awareness to the plight of pets and encouraged people to adopt animals April 29. The "Pet Rescue Awareness Day: Finding Loving Homes for Animals" was attended by students, faculty and residents who brought their pets and acquired information from booths about animal testing, pet adoption and neutering.

Physical therapy offered to public

The Department of Physical Therapy will offer a variety of practice areas this month, especially for children and people with walking problems. The Physical Therapy Center for Advanced Physical Practice will have services ranging from bone density screening and computerized motion analysis.

Water Polo ends season losing two matches in tournament

The No. 12-seed Cal State Northridge women's water polo team wrapped up its season after it lost two matches during the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at UC Irvine April 27-28 against No.5-seed Hawaii and No.11-seed UCSB. The Matadors wrapped up their season with an overall record of 12-21, while their conference record dropped to 1-13.

Matadors finally take out the broom against UCR

The Cal State Northridge softball team accomplished its first sweep of the season, beating the UC Riverside Highlanders in the first two games by scores of 9-5 and 8-6 April 29 and took the finale the following day in a rout 9-1. In game one, the Matadors struck in the first inning.
