Students shed light on homeless animals

Several CSUN students organized an event to bring awareness to the plight of pets and encouraged people to adopt animals April 29. The "Pet Rescue Awareness Day: Finding Loving Homes for Animals" was attended by students, faculty and residents who brought their pets and acquired information from booths about animal testing, pet adoption and neutering.

Physical therapy offered to public

The Department of Physical Therapy will offer a variety of practice areas this month, especially for children and people with walking problems. The Physical Therapy Center for Advanced Physical Practice will have services ranging from bone density screening and computerized motion analysis.

Bill eliminating undocumented student resident fees thwarted

Parts of a bill in the California State Assembly that would have changed the status of undocumented students that allows them to pay resident fees at California state colleges and universities were removed to only include modifying residency status for military personnel.

International players give CSUN tennis a boost

After another journey through the many battles of a tennis season, senior YuYu Myinttun and sophomore Kanykey Koichumanova reflected back on their own journeys, coming from far-away nations to life in the United States. Myinttun, from Rangoon, Myanmar, and Koichumanova, from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, were just two out of seven tennis players born in distant countries and making significant contributions to their team.

The California State Northridge men's baseball team continued Big West conference play, losing two out of three games against the University of California Santa Barbara Gauchos April 28-30 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara. The Matadors' overall record stands at 19-22 on the season, and 3-8 in conference play.

Immigrants find needed help with CSUN project

Carlos Murillo, along with his classmates, moved around and in between the rows of chairs looking for complete answers. Each student had a slip of white paper with part of an answer to a question that will be on the U.S. citizenship test. Talking to classmates, they practiced their English, along with memorizing facts about the U.

Quezada is a student who may not have a future. No matter how hard Quezada works or does well in school, chances are no one will hire Quezada for anything other than menial labor. Quezada is an undocumented student and if the congress passes a Senate's version of the immigration bill, Quezada world will change.

Most people are familiar with the idea that immigration is nothing new to this country. Most people are aware that on some level that immigration, in fact, made this country what it is. What people may not recognize, however, is that immigration was always contentious; there was never a time when one group of immigrants or another, be they Irish, Italian or Chinese, was not despised for some reason, while their understated yet invaluable contribution to the development, economy and general function of the nation went unrecognized.

CSUN students, faculty participate in May Day

Various CSUN organizations and faculty participated in an immigration march in downtown Los Angeles May 1 in what was known as May Day, or "A day without immigrants," to protest recently proposed tougher immigration legislation. CSUN's Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan, a group that seeks to advance consciousness of Chicano history by education and political action, organized about 550 CSUN students, high school students, local area residents and faculty members to participate in the demonstration in downtown L.
