CSUN track and field athletes come up short at NCAA championships

Three CSUN athletes matched their skills against the best in the country at the NCAA Track and Field Championships June 7-10. Juniors Justin Johnson and Anthony Brown and freshman Jere Summers traveled to Sacramento to compete in their signature events. This was the athletes first time at the championships.

Local high school celebrates CSUN gang prevention program

At-risk students and CSUN's Mentoring to Overcome Struggles and Inspire Courage mentors were acknowledged for their commitment to end gang violence June 17 during the second annual Peace Conference at the Jack London Continuation High School. "This type of program is for the at-risk youths, to empower them and provide them with the skills they need to succeed," said Bibi Caspari, director of Forward Step.

USU Board of Directors to see new faces, changes

New fuel cell energy plant could save CSUN money

Construction has begun for a new fuel cell power plant at CSUN, making it the single largest plant of its kind at any university in the world, said university officials. The new 1-megawatt fuel plant will utilize the most efficient technology that could create an environmentally safe energy source for the campus, said Tom Brown, director of Physical Plant Management.

Hip-hop artist Common to headline Big Show 6

The Associated Students Student Production and Campus Entertainment was allocated $43,000 June 20 for the Big Show 6 concert during the first A.S. meeting of the semester. Jon Roven, concert director, said hip-hop recording artist Common would headline Big Show 6, adding that this year's event would be a festival, not a concert only.

At-risk youths aided by $585,000 grant

A $585,000 three-year grant was awarded to the Community Service Learning Program and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at CSUN to fund a gang prevention program. Mentoring to Overcome Struggles and Inspire Courage, which serves disadvantaged youths who are involved in gangs throughout the San Fernando Valley, was awarded the grant to fund services that include counseling and tutoring, said Maureen Rubin, director of CSL at the new Center for Innovative and Engaged Learning Opportunities at CSUN.

ADA rules influence CSUN web redesign

A new CSUN Web site was launched June 12 after it had undergone reconstruction to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new home page is a template that will be the model from which other university Web pages will be developed. Joseph O'Connor, manager of University Web Communications, spearheaded the effort through University Advancement in cooperation with Academic Resources and Information Technology Resources.

Angelides education promises fall short

In this year's California election, we seem to have focused most of our attention on the Democratic candidate for governor. Whether that is indicative of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's stellar job, or lack thereof, is debatable. In an article titled "Wake Up and Vote," the LA Weekly did not endorse Phil Angelides, Democratic candidate for governor, in the primary election despite many of the gubernatorial candidate's progressive ideas for California, especially with regard to education.

Gregorio Alcantar, Debt Management Counselor of Financial Aid, said the cost of tuition and housing usually exceeds a student's income level, which makes student loans and grants the only way to graduate in time.

High gas prices troublesome for commuter students

While prices at the pump remain high, several CSUN students who commute from various cities in southern California find managing expenses troublesome. Arsineh Eskandari, junior psychology major, enrolls in classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays to save gas. Eskandari commutes from La Crescenta.
