Matadors prepare for conference play

Hoping to ride off the momentum of the five-game road trip, in which the CSUN women's volleyball team won four out of five, the Matadors will look to continue their success at home today and Sept. 23. Big West conference play kicks off Thursday with two matches followed by three matches over the weekend.

Propositions fill up November ballot

California voters have less than two months to make up their minds on propositions that could have a profound effect on their lives. On Nov. 7 - besides voting for governor - 13 ballot initiatives will be on the agenda. Whether placed on the ballot by the state Legislature or by petition signatures, a myriad of issues will soon be decided.

Dorm confidential: A weekend lost to alcohol

A year ago, things were different. A year ago, drinking on the weekdays in the dorm was common. Literally, I would go downstairs to one friend's apartment on a Monday night. It was said beforehand, "Okay, everyone must be gone by midnight, 12:30 tops, I have class tomorrow morning!" On one such evening, we all left at around 3:30, with plans for class at nine that were never actually successful.

The automatic doors opened as local residents stepped into the Northridge Fashion Center at 9:30 a.m. The majority of shops and food venues weren't open as people trickled into the lower level of the mall. A small line had formed of people waiting to be allowed into the Center Court of the Northridge Fashion Center, and it steadily grew.

New CSUN professors a diverse bunch

Every semester, CSUN sees its share of new faculty hired from the plethora of departments at the school. This fall, 56 new tenure track faculty members were hired as a result of last year's faculty search. Of these 56, 54 started this fall, said Kiren Dosanjh Zucker, associate professor and director of Faculty Development.

Jam-packed shelters for battered women have overflowed in past years, and now some women and children are turned away from help. Fortunately, there is a proposition on the November ballot that will help improve this situation, and the situation of others who need help as well.

After Hurricane Katrina hit the southern states, California decided to try to protect itself from similar disasters with bonds that will be paid for with taxpayer money. Different organizations are fighting for different propositions that are proposing ways to protect the state.

Just the word cancer usually causes fear, but there are some new developments in the fight against cervical cancer and human papillomavirus.
