I left Karachi on the day of the earthquake to collect my family from the disaster. I didn't reach my village in Dhara Khet, Balakot, until the following day because of the congested roads. It looked like everyone was trying to get up to the disaster area for one reason or the other.

Officer hit by car

A CSUN police officer was hit by a car Sept. 13 while patrolling the CSUN dorms on a bicycle, police said. The officer, James Hartmann, was patrolling with his partner around 10 p.m. when a car sideswiped him, police said. The blow knocked Hartmann into his partner, who remained uninjured.

Emergency housing: shelter for the traumatized

Do you have rats, roaches or ants in your dorms? Being stalked by an ex or dealing with a crazy roommate? If you are, then you are probably headed to emergency housing. CSUN offers a program to move students to another dorm if these issues come up. Emergency housing is a temporary solution to move students to another dorm for a couple of days until a new room is available for them.

Morning after pill available by year’s end

Plan B, the emergency contraception commonly known as the "morning after pill," has been granted over-the-counter status and will be available without a prescription before the end of the year. However, there's a catch to the new over-the-counter status: it's only for people age 18 and over.

CFA seeks to raise awareness

The California Faculty Association is launching a campaign, called "Stop the Rip Offs," that will seek to make students aware of how much money executives in the California State University system are being paid, said CFA President John Travis. Travis said that executives in the CSU are being paid a full salary for up to two years, even after having left their previous jobs, which they are calling golden parachutes.

Freudian Sip to offer discounts

The Freudian Sip coffeehouses at CSUN are expected to introduce frequent drink cards and gift cards before the spring 2007 semester, said Elmer Bautista, manager of Freudian Sip. With the frequent drink cards, customers who purchase nine prepared drinks at Freudian Sip will receive a 10th drink free.

Voter apathy, Gov. Schwarzenegger and healthcare

Pure democracy isn't always feasible. Imagine going to the ballot over a sewage and waste control ordinance. Presuming voter apathy was a non-issue; the sheer inefficiency and impracticality of having every citizen vote on every minutia of every act of government would turn this country into monolithic slug.

Coaching vacancies filled in the off-season

The CSUN Matadors spent the past summer filling various assistant coaching vacancies. The men's basketball team has been the busiest, filling two vacant assistant positions and its vacant director of basketball operations position. The women's basketball and men's volleyball team also filled vacant positions.

Scoring frenzy leads Matadors past Idaho

The CSUN women's soccer team scored early and often, beating the University of Idaho Vandals 7-2 at Matador Soccer Field on Sept. 12. In a game where goal production came from six different CSUN players, forward Kristal Phillips led the Matadors with two goals and forward Tessa Binkley tied the school record for assists with three.

Cross country finishes 9th and 12th

The CSUN women's cross country team started its season by finishing in ninth-place at the 62nd Annual Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Sept. 16, while the Men's team finished in 12th place. Julie Hancock was the top Matador finisher on the women's team by placing 33rd overall in a time of 19:44 in the women's 5k.
