Many of the methods used in cancer research are synthetic, but not in the laboratory of chemistry professor Tom Minehan. Research in organic synthesis is rare in the western United States, but it is happening right here at CSUN. Minehan's laboratory, located in Eucalyptus Hall, is developing chemical methods for medical research that does not harm the environment.

CSUN police pay below industry standards

Campus police make far less than their counterparts in other community police departments, discrepancies of as much as $40,000, according to data in documents from CSUN and other universities. According to CSUN budget records for 2005-2006, while some officers make around $78,000 a year, the minimum salary for officers is about $46,000 a year before bonuses and overtime.

Stem cell research one of main priorities in Congress

The new speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, has already proposed federal funds for stem cell research as one of her top priorities. And it is only a matter of time before we again hear the religious right complain about this research degenerating human life, the way they did earlier during the Bush administration when the president vetoed the bill.

Grant awarded for study on glycobiology

The National Institute of Health awarded a $400,000 grant to Steven B. Oppenheimer, Ph.D. and his Center for Cancer and Developmental Biology, for research conducted on glycobiology. The $400,000 is part of a total of $41 million awarded to the Consortium for Functional Glycomics, for which Oppenheimer is an investigator.

CSUN puts up season lows in loss to BYU

It was rough on the road for the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team, setting new season lows in shooting percentage (27.9 percent) and points (48) in its 55-48 loss to Brigham Young University at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah on Dec. 9. "BYU took away shots that we were looking for and forced us to have people taking shots in the positions that we don't normally do," head coach Staci Schultz said.

The United States Soccer Federation passed up a chance of signing former Germany national coach Juergen Klinsmann to lead the U.S. men's national soccer squad. Klinsmann withdrew his name from consideration for the job last Thursday, but there is no need to worry, for the USSF presented Friday their new interim head coach.

CSUN planetarium to host show about possible life in space

Astro-biologists, scientists who study the possibility of extraterrestrial life, have moved beyond the red planet to pose the broader question by asking if we are alone in the Universe. "The Search for Life in the Universe" is the title of a CSUN planetarium show that explores the possibilities of finding earth-like environments where life, at least hypothetically, could exist.

The Internet has immensely bolstered the digital age by providing people all over the world with the means to disseminate information and inexpensively communicate with each other. With gargantuan Web sites like MySpace becoming Internet juggernauts because of their ability to attract a wide range of people from every age and ethnic demographic, our level of freedom seems almost utopian.
