Vintage photographs and historic news articles that document the Civil Rights Movement are being featured in a series in the main lobby of the Oviatt Library. Black and white photographs of the 1963 civil rights march in Washington, D.C. and the march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.

The Burrito Project

The Los Angeles Burrito Project is a group of friends who meet once a week to help make a difference in their community. Using materials bought by the members themselves and donated by local restaurants, they make 300 to 400 burritos for the disenfranchised people of downtown Los Angeles.

Film students sharpen much needed fundraising skills

Finding Bigfoot," a film about one man's struggle with the question of whether to live a routine life or to follow his own ambitions, is one of the 10 senior film projects selected this year by CSUN's Department of Cinema and Television Arts. The student films range from 10 to 15 minutes but even short student films like these can run up to $40,000, according to Professor Nate Thomas, head of the film production option in the cinema and television arts department.

CSUN gets new black studies database

Instruction was given to students and faculty on the use of a new database by ProQuest at the Sierra Center Friday. Representatives introduced the new database, called the Black Studies Center, which enables students to conduct searches for online material related to black culture.

CSUN leading the way in alternative energy

When the Physical Plant Management staff broke ground for the construction of CSUN's fuel cell power plant in April 2006, the team only had eight months to complete the entire process. This included digging up a 5.5 ft. hole, re-compacting 95 percent of the dirt excavated from that hole, running a new gas, water, and sewer main, cementing the foundation where the power plant would sit, and putting together the power plant.

Tax Assistance Program thrives at Northridge

The first time he helped someone to prepare tax forms, he was nervous. He felt uncomfortable knowing that if he did not do it right, he could get in trouble, but once the first customer was satisfied the others came a lot easier. After that, he felt a lot more confident and joyful for being a part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program at CSUN and for helping people do the right thing.

A.S. recycling program waste of students’ money

Since 1991, the Associated Students at CSUN have been using our money to pay for recycling. It seems like a valid service that most students would be more than willing to support, but take into account the fact that over $160,000 is spent and only $7,100 is brought in as revenue, according to the 2006-07 AS budget.

Men's Soccer CSUN player called up to play for U.S. under-23 squad Sean Franklin, senior defenseman, received the call to represent the U.S. under-23 team. The team of 18 players traveled to Japan and tied the Japanese under-22 men's squad yesterday 0-0. They will then face a J-League team on Feb.

Track athletes break records

The CSUN men and women's track and field team will compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Indoor Track and Field Championship on February 23 and 24 in Nampa, Idaho. The competition is hosted by Boise State University and will take place at Jackson's Track at the Idaho Sports Center.

California Refund Value increase designed to encourage recycling

As an incentive to get more Californians to recycle, the California Refund Value was increased as of Jan. 1 of this year, but will not go into effect until July 1. Consumers currently pay a CRV of 4 cents for beverage containers under 24 oz., such as soda cans and bottled water, and 8 cents for containers that are 24 oz.
