Potential college dean rallies support

As CSUN prepares to hire a new dean of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communications, Bonnie Brennen, the first of three candidates, talked about her past experience and future goals for CSUN. Brennen has educational and employment experience in corporate communications and said more media attention and a stronger inter-departmental relationship could raise awareness of the Mike Curb College in the community.

Leaders discuss rec center referendum

The University Student Union Board of Directors met Monday to discuss the upcoming referendum on the new recreation center and also to approve health and dental insurance for USU retirees. The recreation center referendum is the second of two attempts. Alisa Langford, a graduate assistant of USU marketing and public relations, said that this time around, informing students has been the priority.

There is no doubt CSUN is a university that lacks something other institutions such as UCLA and USC have. Yes, we do not have a football team or a prestigious sports program, but those are not it. It is such a problem that the University Student Union and Associated Students have gone to great lengths to do something about it.

With disco lights, Iranian music and food, the Iranian Student Association kicked off the celebrations of a festive New Year, or NoRuz, for all to enjoy on Wednesday. It was a festival that had all the makings of a party and was attended by nearly 100 people.

Club says A.S. budget not sufficient for events

Americans are so used to seeing thousands of advertisements on a daily basis that it is impossible not to recognize what a Nike swoosh looks like or to know what product is being advertised with a poster using a black silhouette on a bright background. "Subvertisements: Using Ads and Logos for Protest" is an exhibition currently on display at the CSUN Art Gallery that demonstrates how popular ads can be used to express political and social issues.

‘Wild West’ nostalgia for unlikely audience

Western art sculptures have rode off an unusual path in Redwood Hall. Since January 31st this year, CSUN has displayed several bronze statues by renowned Western artist Harry Jackson, a donation from Washington Mutual. But instead of appreciating the art and history behind the statues, visitors are more interested in finding out why they're there.

Coffee chain forms label for up-and-coming artists

Starbucks places quotes on their recycled cups to inspire the minds and hearts of consumers. They also sell music to "inspire the soul." But Starbucks is now taking a step further into their music plans. Starbucks and Concord Music Group joined efforts to create Hear Music, a Los Angeles-based music label, and plan to release their first album by the end of this year, but the artist has not yet been revealed.

During a speech last week in Mexico, President Bush renewed his pledge to reform immigration law and establish a temporary guest worker program. Bush claimed that such a plan was compatible with both legal and humanitarian concerns because reducing the motivation for illegal immigration would help curb exploitation of immigrant labor.
