Men’s volleyball team sweeps NJIT

Ivan Yeo March 16, 2007
The CSUN Matador men's volleyball team ended its five-game home-stand with a bang, sweeping the New Jersey Institute of Technology by scores of 30-17, 30-18 and 30-18 at the Matadome Wednesday night, improving their record to 13-9. "We played very well, and we played hard the entire time," head coach Jeff Campbell said.

CSUN students help lend support to faculty’s fight

Grace Chon March 16, 2007
More than 500 CSUN students filled out yellow survey cards that declared their opposition to the student tuition increase from a necessity to increase the quality of their education by marking "yes" to strike. In order for their stance to be heard and taken seriously, Educational Opportunity Program student workers are stepping into classrooms to inform fellow students about the two-day strike, which CSU faculty voted on over the last two weeks.

CSUN students swarm GradFest

defaultuser March 16, 2007
Students flocked to GradFest 2007 at the Matador Bookstore Complex on Wednesday, giving business to the various vendors in the building and getting one step closer in the commencement process. The long lines could be attributed to some students' not knowing that they can actually order their cap and gown anytime through March 23 at the bookstore, thus avoiding the crowds, which were consistently dense throughout the day.

Genetic counseling program helps bridge emotional gap with patients

Hilda Yeghishian March 15, 2007
There is a big misconception about genetic counselors. "People think we tell patients to abort their babies, which is not true. Our job is to tell them the facts and give them options, to help them come up with what works best for them," said Claudia Hernandez, a second year graduate student in the genetic counseling masters program at CSUN.

From slave to grave, history of Saint Patrick’s Day revealed

Grace Chon March 15, 2007
Around this time of year, the color green becomes the theme. A pinch is given to those who dare to forget to wear green, beer is dyed green and elaborate parades are just not right without green. Many Americans participate in St. Patrick's Day without knowing much about the day.

CSU Board of Trustees approves 10 percent fee increase

Sam Womack March 15, 2007
The California State University Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to approve a 10 percent increase in student fees, making the CSU undergraduate tuition for one academic year to $3,421. Chancellor Reed and the Trustees reiterated numerous times that they would apply to the state government for an increase in the CSU budget or for the governor to buy out the student fee increase as he did in the 2006-2007 academic year, but the crowd present for the vote and one of the trustees were not convinced.

Teacher’s textbook assignments too many, unused

Justin Satzman March 14, 2007
I am sorry to beat a tired drum here, but college is expensive. There are not only the rising fees, but also the cost of parking, food and the rising amount of interest rates that are being put on college loans. Many college students can't work full-time and some cannot work at all.

CFA strike sends wrong message to students

Darya Riyahi March 14, 2007
Walking through Sierra Hall one day, I came across a poster that said, "I don't want to strike but I will." Much happened that day that I can't recall but the sigh I uttered after my run in with that message, followed me though out the day. We've heard much about the CFA (California Faculty Association) negotiations over the past couple of years, and as much as it makes me sad that they're still struggling for pennies and dimes, it makes me sadder that the CFA has taken the place of "teacher" in my mind.

Matadors take advantage of home field

Ivan Yeo March 14, 2007
The CSUN Matador softball team started a little rusty in the beginning of its four-game home stand at Matador Diamond, but ended up finishing on a good note as it got ready for a big weekend in Orange County. The Matadors lost the first of a doubleheader to the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks 5-3 on March 12, but came back to win the second game 2-0, then swept the Canisius Golden Griffins the very next day, winning the first game 11-3 and the second game 6-2.

Abortion provider appreciation day not about abortion

PAUL CASTILLO March 14, 2007
Everyone has their own opinion on abortion. Like many issues of our modern society, we've boiled down the argument into two narrowly defined sides, pro-choice and pro-life. Like every complex issue, though, there are actually a number of points of view which are not represented by either pro-choice or pro-life.
