Grace Chon May 14, 2007
About 100 seats, red, black and white balloons, and an assortment of food filled the room for students from organizations and clubs at CSUN who were eager to hear their names be called for awards. Twenty-five awards were given out at the Clubs and Organizations Awards Ceremony, "Celebrating the Spirit of CSUN," at the Grand Salon on Thursday to acknowledge hard work that has added to the community on and off campus throughout the 2006-07 school year.

Credit cards teach students financial lessons

Jocelyn Swartz May 14, 2007
Credit card marketing and applications are prevalent on campuses across the nation. Credit card applications are passed out in courtyards and are thrown into bags at the bookstore. The plethora of applications can be considered to be convenient by those students who wish to build up their credit scores with credit cards from reputable companies, but on the other hand, accessible credit card applications can also prove to be disastrous for others on the same campus.

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor: Your recent article about Social Security reform mischaracterizes the appointment of Andrew Biggs, who joins the Social Security Administration in the hopes of helping young people get back our retirement money ("Social Security future bleak with Bush's new appointment bias," May 1).

CSUN gets to postseason for first time since 2004

Ivan Yeo May 14, 2007
To say the CSUN Matadors' softball team had a pretty good weekend is an understatement. First, the Matadors took two of three games from future Big West Conference member UC Davis at LaRue Field over the weekend, with one of those wins being a combined no-hitter thrown by junior Mercedes Lovato and freshman Amanda Pitzenberger, then as the team made its way back to Northridge, they quickly found out that they would be one of 64 teams participating in the NCAA tournament starting on Thursday.

Students should use college to hone personality

Aaron Montan May 14, 2007
I am a graduating senior here at CSUN. And while most of you probably hate me and will curse my name for getting out of here in four years, I want to give you young-ins some advice. I was once like you, driving to campus, going to school, then going straight home.

Attendance not reflective of intelligence

Jocelyn Swartz May 14, 2007
Throughout this semester, the students at Cal State Northridge have been educated on the matter of where their tuition money is headed, courtesy of the disagreements between the California Faculty Association and the CSU administration. Talk of a strike contributed to the interest by many students to learn about the situation and discover where the money was going.

Student a cappella group, Acasola performs at the SSU

Kriti Sood May 14, 2007
Sol Train' was the title that Acasola group members agreed upon for their first funky performance held in a concert-like setting Saturday night at the Satellite Student Union. After considering everything from "Corn Fest" to "Humerus: Not just a bone in your body," the relatively new CSUN a cappella group decided to stick with what they thought would better suit a 1970s theme.

Matadors swept by UC Riverside, on five-game skid

Ivan Yeo May 14, 2007
After Saturday's 18-1 drubbing at the hands of No. 17 UC Riverside, the CSUN Matador baseball team looked to deliver a much better effort against the Highlanders at Matador field on Sunday. The Matadors did just that, staying with the Highlanders pitch for pitch and hit for hit, but Riverside was still a step ahead of the curve, as they came up with the timely hits and its pitching staff held off several Northridge threats throughout the afternoon on their way to a 7-4 win, giving them the season series sweep over the Matadors.

Are diamonds really a girl’s best friend?

Nareen Manoukian May 9, 2007
Sure, we all can read some trendy article on the Internet about why women shouldn't want diamonds. And we can talk big about how women have been "psychologically conditioned" within the past 60 years to believe that they deserve them. But really, when it comes down to it, why do most women expect diamonds? And, more importantly, should they expect diamonds? Different women have different reasons for why they think diamonds are necessary for an engagement ring.
