Denys Nazarov October 29, 2007
The California Gold Rush offered a promise of wealth to many people in search of a better life 150 years ago. But immigrants who helped define this period in California's history often had to leave against their will. Kelly Sisson, historian and scholar of American culture at the University of Michigan, spoke at the Whittsett Room of Sierra Hall on Oct.

She steps up to the microphone wearing a genuine, girl-next-door smile, which is refreshing compared to her audience of Santa Monica hipsters.

Plastic women have never been so fake in comedy film

Tiffany Kelly October 25, 2007
Men, especially in Los Angeles, are often accused of going after 'plastic' women. Though the word plastic is used metaphorically to describe dull, flirty, materialistic party girls, it is explored in the literal sense in "Lars and the Real Girl." Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) is a quiet, socially inept young man whose only social activities include attending church and his daily office job.

Reduce gang violence by understanding race

Harriet Miranda October 25, 2007
African-Americans and Latinos have a shared history of oppression, which is why I don't understand the reasoning behind all the racial tensions in Los Angeles among these two ethnic groups. Last week, federal prosecutors brought charges against 60 individuals from the Latino Florencia 13 gang, ranging from racketeering, drug charges and racially motivated crimes against African Americans.
