California’s Native American art makes an appearance at CSUN

Sing me your story, Dance me home," an art and poetry show representing California's Native people opened Friday night at the CSUN art gallery. Alan Salazar, a spiritual advisor and educator of Chumash and Tatavian descent, performed a ceremonial blessing for the show.

Salvador Dali is back and better than ever at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. LACMA has dedicated 10 viewing rooms to the master of surrealism and on display are not only his most famous works of art but also the lesser known sculptures and films. Attendees encounter the first of Dali's twisted pieces upon entering the museum.

Gillenwater takes second at Aztec Fall Classic

Junior Krystina Gillenwater shot a one-over par two round score of 145 to take second place individually in the Aztec Fall Classic at Salt Creek Golf Course in San Diego. Head coach Bonnie Murphy said she knew Gillenwater was capable of putting up these scores.

Mattias Bonvehi began his career as a Matador soccer player this semester. The freshman midfielder, who played for El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills, is on the 29-man roster that'll be battling this season to make it back to the NCAA tournament at the end of November.

Matadors finish 12th

The Cal State Northridge men's golf team hosted its annual Bill Cullum Invitational this week, finishing in 12th place overall. UC Santa Barbara took the team title, with a total score of 870, while their own Brian Hollenbeck claimed the individual title with rounds of 71-71-70, finishing at 4-under-par 212.

Matadors lose home opener against UCSD

The Matadors lost their opening home game 8-5 to division rival UC San Diego at Valley Ice Center Saturday. The loss drops the Matadors ice hockey team to a record of 2-1 in division play. The loss at home follows the same pattern as last season, when CSUN and UCSD both won games on the opposing team's home ice.

California should be willing to pay more sales tax for health care

Health care, two words that dominate the center stage from Sacramento to Washington. But in reality nobody is doing anything about it. President George W. Bush did not even sign the bill that would have covered almost 4 million uninsured children. Last week, both the House and Senate passed the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 or CHIPRA with significant bipartisan support.

Campus safety should improve

The CSUN women's volleyball team spent its weekend in Northern California attempting to rally from 2-0 deficits. The Matadors were successful in their first attempt against UC Davis on Friday night and came close to repeating that feat against University of the Pacific the following night, though they still fell in four games.

Matadors lose for fifth straight time

After taking an early 1-0 lead, the Cal State Northridge women's soccer team allowed three straight unanswered goals to conference opponent Long Beach State to lose their fifth in a row, and remain winless in three conference games this season. The 3-1 loss dropped the Matadors' record to 2-9-1 overall and 0-3 in the Big West Conference.

Discussion held on media’s effect on body image

A brown bag discussion on the media's impact on women's body image was held Oct. 8 at the Women's Resource and Research Center in partnership with the CSUN Women's Studies Student Association. Sociology professor Melanie Klein spoke to a group of male and female students about her struggles with body image, specifically how she overcame them, and the way the media impacts women's body image.
