‘Martian Child’ roots through former student’s experiences

Dramatic and comical, "Martian Child," takes the trophy for attempting to swell-up the audience's eyes with tears, and provoking a sense of sympathy for David (John Cusack), a widowed science fiction writer longing to form a family of his own. Directed by Menno Meyjes, Time Warner's New Line Cinema, filmed the movie based on a novel by science fiction writer David Gerrold, a former CSUN student that studied theater arts in the mid 60s.

A.S. president, students named CSU trustee finalists

Associated Students President Adam Haverstock, along with three other students, were named as finalists in the search for a California State University student trustee at the California State Student Association meeting at CSUN on Saturday. Eight students from across the state applied for the position to represent CSU students at the statewide level.

Ray Bradbury’s ‘Frost and Fire’ makes multimedia debut

What would you do if your entire life lasted just eight days, if you were forced to grow dramatically overnight and learn the lessons of life knowing you had your days numbered? This past weekend, Theater Bethune presented this "multimedia theater experience" based on Ray Bradbury's novel "Frost and Fire," at the Alex Theater in Glendale.

Scholar discusses her plate tectonics research

A Jerome Richfield Memorial Scholar informed the audience in attendance about her plate tectonics research, which was made possible by the scholarship fund, during the Provost's Colloquium Series. CSUN Provost Harry Hellenbrand presented a plaque to Elena Miranda at the beginning of the presentation and introduced her and her subject matter.

A parade of gratitude

The Fourth Annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade took place Sunday at the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. More than 60 veterans groups, five high school marching bands, the San Diego-based Navy Band, the 1st Marine Division Band from Camp Pendleton and the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest (562 Air Force Band) paid tribute to the veterans.

A.S. allocates more than $12,000 at weekly meeting

The Associated Students voted to allocate more than $12,000 at Wednesday's finance committee meeting. The committee voted 2-0 to allocate $500 to Kristen Johnson's, a student from the Geography Department, who requested $600 to pay for a trip to Belize. Johnson asked for $100 for airfare, $500 for ground transportation and other miscellaneous items.

New Mario game offers same great gameplay

I've always been a fan of replaying and remaking old games. Things like Square-Enix's remake of Final Fanatsy III really excite me because I don't think anyone would contend that very many games are perfect just the way they are. Almost any game could use an update.

Matadors stick it to the Cougars

Sometimes, even rivalry games can have blowouts. The CSUN men's hockey team extended their win streak to four games after beating the College of the Canyons Cougars on their own ice 15-4 Friday. The games between these two teams are usually more anticipated than this season.

Northridge gets early start on season at BYU Tournament

It was an early start for the CSUN men's volleyball team. The 2007-2008 Matadors got its first taste of competition on Nov. 9-10 as they went up to Provo, Utah for the BYU Tournament. CSUN fared quite well, rebounding from an opening loss to the host Cougars to defeat Utah Valley State College, then taking both matches it played against the Cougars the next day.

CSSA passes resolution to limit campus’ use of A.S. fee

A resolution that would set new limitations on campus presidents spending the Associated Students fees on university programs and services was approved by the California State Student Association at Humboldt State University during their Oct. 22 meeting. The resolution was written by CSUN A.

Film festival held by College of Humanities

Students gathered in the halls of Manzanita Hall on Friday to talk about the films they saw during the 2007 College of Humanities Film Festival in the Amber Screening Room. "I really enjoyed being able to come to at least some of the films today," Yesenia Gutierrez, an attendee said.
