Matadors routed by Pepperdine in season-opener

Ivan Yeo November 14, 2007
It was clearly a Friday night to forget for the CSUN women's basketball team at Firestone Fieldhouse. One week after poor shooting cost the Matadors their exhibition opener, the same problem came back to haunt them in their season opener, as they were routed by the host Pepperdine Waves.

During the halftime break of the CSUN men's basketball team's season-opening game against Chicago State, head coach Bobby Braswell referenced boxing while addressing his team. "They punched us in the first half," Braswell said of Chicago State. "We came in at halftime and said 'fellas, we're in for a fight' and we were either going to throw in the towel or we're going to fight back.

Discrimi-Nation: Asian-American

John Manalang November 14, 2007
When people ask me if I love dogs, I'm always hesitant to answer with a simple, "Yes I do." Why do I hesitate? Because I'm Filipino and people have this misconception that Filipinos often treat their dogs, how should I put it? As more than just pets. Others think that "man's best friend" could potentially be a "Filipino man's best dinner.

Letters to the editor

In Chrystal King's "Discrimi-Nation: African-Americans" article, she accurately described the plight of African-American students growing up and attending schools where, to see another face like theirs, is scarce. I too encountered situations of being forced to speak for an entire race when controversial issues such as racism or the use of the N-word came up in class, which can put people of any ethnic background in an awkward position.

Financial aid and student loans should be revamped

Weintana Abraha November 14, 2007
My name is Weintana Abraha and I am in debt for about $100,000. You might be thinking, "What the hell has she done to be in so over her head with money problems?" Even to me, it seems unbelievable. I'm barely 20 years old. I'm not a gambling addict. I've never been in trouble with the law or involved in drugs.

The really big one that got away

Debby von Winckelmann November 14, 2007
The CSUN men's soccer team let a big one get away yesterday at Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors had a two-goal lead, but it wasn't enough to give them the win against the defending national champions, ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. With less than a minute left in the first half, the Gauchos started their comeback, scoring their first goal.

The CSUN women's volleyball team finally went a week without splitting a pair of matches. Unfortunately, the Matadors came out of this past week with consecutive losses at home. First the Pacific Tigers defeated the Matadors in four games on Friday night, then 24 hours later, the UC Davis Aggies picked up their first win in Big West Conference play by beating CSUN, also in four games.

Matadors defeated by Mustangs 1-0

Ivan Yeo November 13, 2007
The second meeting between the CSUN Cal Poly San Luis Obispo men's soccer teams saw someone come out with a win this time around. Unfortunately for the Matadors, it wasn't them. The Mustangs struck late in the first half and relied on its defense to stifle Northridge and send them to a 1-0 loss in San Luis Obispo on Wednesday night.
