The week before school started, I got a call from Ken Swisher, the Associate Vice President for Public Relations for the campus. ?I didn't answer, but his message said that he needed to talk to me and that it was urgent. ?I was pleasantly surprised to find that the university was planning to host Hillary Clinton on campus.

Matadors win 2 of 3 to stay in playoff hunt

The CSUN men's hockey team won two of three crucial home games this past weekend. With a 9-5 record and the regular season nearing an end, the Matadors needed at least one win to stay in the regional playoff hunt. While the official results show CSUN winning two games in an offensive explosion, they should also get credit for a significant moral victory.

Still searching for a win after loss to Long Beach

The CSUN women's basketball team is still searching for its first win this season after losing to Long Beach State 71-56 at the Walter Pyramid Saturday night. Senior center Katie Holloway scored a game-high 22 points while pulling down eight rebounds. Holloway also made a career-high eight free throws.

?Men and women defeated by Huskies

Although the Matadors lost both the men's and women's competitions against the visiting Washington Huskies on Saturday, the swim meet still provided a wealth of learning and personal victories. The women's 400-meter medley relay set the tone for the meet, with the Huskies taking a first-place finish at 3:53.

Billiards tournament rallies students

Table-tennis and billiard enthusiasts on campus can test their skills against fellow students in the Associations of College Union International (ACUI) Qualifier tournament, which will be held in CSUN's Games Room at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The annual tournament for single-player table-tennis and 9-ball will be held in the Games Room.

Pep band fires up fans at Matadome

The Matador Pep Band made its debut at the Matadome Saturday, pumping up fans attending the men's basketball game against Long Beach State. The newly reassembled pep band, which had been missing since CSUN's football program was dismantled in 2001, was led by senior music industry studies major Brian Mellblom, who has been working since October to get the band off the ground.

Students compete in Big West ShootOut at CSUN

Students showed off their shooting skills, or lack thereof, while competing in the Big West ShootOut at the Student Activities Center on Thursday. . The 2008 Big West ShootOut, which is touring all Big West Conference campuses, made a stop at CSUN and gave one co-ed team a shot at the big prize - a chance to win $5,000 in March at the Big West Basketball Tournament in Anaheim.

CSU budget cuts affect enrollment

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's version of the California State University budget for the 2008-2009 year includes a $312 million budget cut, Dr. Harold Hellenbrand said at the University Planning and Budget Group meeting on Jan. 11. Hellenbrand, who is the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said the exact effects of the budget cuts on CSUN's $302 million budget are still unknown.
