Letter to the editor

defaultuser February 26, 2008
Dear Editor, I hardly see how the flap over the Grover Cleveland High School newspaper Valentine's Day issue is "censorship." It's been a long established principle that underage people are to be protected from sexually explicit materials. Need I comment how under the circumstances explicit depictions of genitalia would be considered "sexual harassment?" Perhaps those people who are offended by the female genitals being thusly displayed have grounds for a sexual harassment lawsuit against the writers and editors of Le Sabre, as well as against the high school students wearing the T-shirts shown in your article.

‘Step Up 2 The Streets’ big on beats, short on acting

Tawny Gestuvo February 26, 2008
The new cast of 'Step Up 2 The Streets' stays true to the cheesy old ways of the original, and again, acting is just another excuse to dance. The opening scene preludes to skilled choreography that is sporadically situated throughout the movie. Director John Chu knows people don't come to movies of this sort for award winning acting, and he floods the scenes with energetic dance sequences and product placement.

‘The Vagina Monologues’ entertains a sold-out crowd

Alyssa Lofgren February 26, 2008
Just days after the word "vagina" sparked a huge controversy at Cleveland High School in Reseda, CSUN put on a full-fledged production of Eve Ensler's 'The Vagina Monologues,' attracting an energetic crowd of hundreds of people. Set against a pink-lit backdrop, about 30 girls sat on stage while individual actresses performed distinct monologues.

Cynthia Gomez February 26, 2008
The genetic counseling program at CSUN is being affected by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed $312.9 million cut to the CSU system budget. The program stopped accepting new students in 2008 due to the proposed budget cut, upsetting CSUN students and professors in the program.

‘Hinemi’ highlights traveling through memory and time

Joanna Beckett February 26, 2008
All memories begin and end in a particular time and place. Miyazawa Akio's play, "Hinemi," dispels this notion when he transcends those memories into a place where time is ever shifting and fluid. Hinemi is an abstract connotation of time, an element that can become overwhelming and difficult to follow initially during the performance.

DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist mix up a hard sell at the Wiltern in Hollywood

Dylan Miles February 26, 2008
Underground music is a term tossed around unjustly too often these days. There are those musicians that try their hardest to be categorized into this realm of music for the mere sake of esoteric nomenclature. Then, there are those artists who have come to disregard the subculture concern of accolade and a conventional understanding of the music that they make.

A senior’s discount: Missing dorks

Sean Campe February 26, 2008
Writing this, right now, as your eyes glide over and absorb my words: I'm drunk. Hammered, trashed, s**t faced, squashed, blitzed, tied on, tossed, and just down right bloody bashed. And I'm listening to m.i.a.'s Kala (a great album). It's all easy, really: two beers and a glass of wine with dinner; then a glass of champagne and another half of beer to help chase the last of my cousin's bottle of Jack Daniels.

Matadors beat Bruins

Debby von Winckelmann February 26, 2008

Head coach Jeff Campbell said the win against UCLA was a good one and both teams looked steady throughout the match. "Both games two and three were close, they could have gone either way," Campbell said.

Matadors lose a close one to 49ers

Ivan Yeo February 26, 2008
So close, yet so far. The CSUN women's basketball team was well in position to pick up its second win of the season, its first Big West Conference win, and therefore, jump into the running for a spot in the Big West Tournament. ?CSUN led by as many as eight points with more than five minutes left in its game, led by six with more than three minutes left and by one with 33 seconds left, but was still unable to close out the 49ers, as Long Beach scored 18 of the game's final 25 points to escape the Matadome with a 49-48 win.

Northridge comes up short against Rider, loses 73-72

Alonso Tacanga February 26, 2008
Northridge head coach Bobby Braswell called out "emergency" to guard Deon Tresvant midway through the second half. If the play call was a signal for him to carry the offense along with teammate Josh Jenkins, it worked, all the way down to the final second.
