Business, humanities students visit China

Dylan Miles March 11, 2008
Eighteen students from the College of Business and Economics and the College of Humanities were chosen for an overseas field trip to China during spring break. The students, who were picked from 200 applicants, will participate in the week-long, faculty-led excursion, which will lead participants to many internationally influential cities in China, such as Beijing and Shanghai, in order to give students an even sense of both the economic and cultural impact that China has and will continue to have on the world.

‘Charlie Bartlett,’ though filled with impressive cast, falls flat

Jessica Hager March 11, 2008
Among the many film genres that have been successful in drawing audiences year after year, the category that seems to have the most sticking power is the teen-movie, or high school-drama. One more film can be added to this extensive list: Charlie Bartlett, by first-time director Jon Poll.

Chiodos opens for Linkin Park with skilled intensity

Dylan Miles March 11, 2008
There is a very distinct difference between going to see a show for the purpose of entertainment and going to see a show for the purpose of having seen the show. Going to a live performance of any musical artist could be considered a form of entertainment, but when you walk out of the venue with a retrieved and elevated sense of musical appreciation, you were more than just entertained; you were changed, for better or for worse.

Former prisoner of Iran, Sussan Golmohammadi, was a student at UCLA in the 1970s while her parents were in Iran during the oppressive Shah regime. Letter to the editor

defaultuser March 11, 2008
Dear Editor, The recent opinion article by Betsy Garcia ("The media may have taken away Clinton's chances") profoundly misses the mark on why the Clinton campaign finds itself in its current predicament. It is not the media, as Ms. Garcia suggests, it is Clinton and her campaign staff who should bear the burden of this potentially failed campaign.

Pasadena should not $*’#ing censor

Anthony Graham March 11, 2008
What is this $#%@!? Are you %#$@ing kidding me? South Pasadena became a "cuss-free" zone last week until Friday, March 7. And while it wasn't as if you would be hauled away to jail for any infringement, to curse in front of Pasadena natives at the time would mean doom by glares and social-annihilation.

‘All About Walken’ impression show a must for devoted fans

Matthew Curran March 11, 2008
If someone has ever asked you for more cowbell or you've danced along to Fatboy Slim's, "Weapon of choice," then you've most likely heard of Christopher Walken. Chances are you've even tried out your own Walken impersonation. "All About Walken" is a play running in its third year which serves as both homage and send-up to the actor who has appeared in over ninety movies spanning over forty years.

‘Married Life’ focuses on clich’eacute;s, more strife than joy

Sean Campe March 11, 2008
Let's be frank for a moment: I'm not married, engaged nor in the process of settling down. I'm dating, but in turn still searching and wondering whom the mystery guest will be that I'll spend my years waking to every morning. I do not, however, think that Harry (Chris Cooper) thought about the true meaning of settling down when he married Pat (Patricia Clarkson).

CTVA professor offers glimpse of life in civil rights era South

Alyssa Lofgren March 11, 2008
The wavy lines that frame some of Frederick Kuretski's photographs were not imbued for artistic effect - they are the remnants of a basement flood. The fact that the undulating, soft waves only add to the pictures proves one thing; Kuretski's images are profound, and their impact on the viewer is due to more than their popular history.

Seniors honored at final home game

Alonso Tacanga March 10, 2008
Before it was over and even before it began, four Matadors felt like no other person could feel that night. They were on their home floor, playing the last college regular-season game of their lives and putting on a more-than-convincing display for the crowd.
