Cruncher time

January 31, 2009

Mustangs are within eight, 73-65, and there is 1:55 to go in the game. Matadors have possession of the ball. With it they will ... (waits) ... ... get two free throws. Tremaine Townsend was fouled. He makes both. CSUN up 75-65. 1:34 to go.

Braswell calls for time with his team (CSUN) leading 69-62 with 3:54 to go. Rodrigue Mels has sparked this second-half offense but hasn't been as sound defensively. Here is, though, going back into the game.

“Sit down, coach”

Alonso Tacanga

January 31, 2009

That was the latest chant of this Cal Poly Student section. Bobby Braswell then proceeded to sit down. The crowd cheered, "yayyyy." CSUN's up 69-60 with five minutes to play. In control, but not out of the woods just yet.

Cal Poly running

January 31, 2009

The Mustangs still have a run in them and this Cal Poly crowd is loving it. The current one is of nine straight points and has cut the Matador lead to 60-53 with nine minutes to go. Kenny Daniels cuts into that. 62-53, CSUN. Or 62-55? Weirdest play I've seen. Thomas made a layup as Willie Galick took...

Kids are better! One little kid pumping his fist at midcourt in the middle of a timeout is what you need to get a crowd rolling. Signed: The Mott Gym.

The Mustangs have cut into the lead but it's still double digits, 53-43, with 13:32 to play in the second half. Now Mr. Chaz Thomas makes it a nine-point lead with a free throw. And Rodrigue Mels looking like Manu Ginobili here. He's driving to the basket and shooting threes like an Argentine.

That wasn’t a foul?

January 31, 2009

Bobby Braswell asked the refs whether an apparent push of Lorenzo Keeler to Kenny Daniels wasn't a foul and a fan right here answered for the men in black and white. "No. It's not a foul. Sit down," he said. Good stuff. And Rodrigue Mels has scored eight points in less than three minutes in this second...

Second half starts

January 31, 2009

With Rob Haynes in the huddle, the Matadors get set to start the second half. Rodrigue Mels is back in the starting lineup for CSUN and he begins the half by making a layup while getting fouled. Free throw's good. CSUN leads 38-28.

And the Matadors ended the half in an 8-0 run. Josh Jenkins has 12 points (all on 3-pointers) for CSUN. Chaz Thomas also has 12 points and leads the Mustangs. And who do the Cal Poly fans think Gary Coleman is? I don't know.

Gary Coleman?

Alonso Tacanga

January 31, 2009

These CP fans are chanting "Gary Coleman!," a familiar chant made famous in Santa Barbara by Gaucho fans ticked at point guard Josh Jenkins. Funny thing is, though, they're chanting it but they're not looking at Jenkins. It's as if they didn't know what the chant means. It's funny though, and Jenkins...

Jenkins’ night?

January 31, 2009

A third 3-pointer with a Mustang right in his grill. Just after Cal Poly had obtained its first lead of the night. But now it's CSUN back up, 30-28. Oh wow another three from Jenkins. 33-28.

He’s alright

Chaz Thomas seems to have recovered from his early injury. He just drilled a 3-pointer from about 25 feet away from the basket. It's a close defensive battle here at Mott Gym. CSUN's still up, 25-23, with 3:49 to play. The Matadors are shooting 52 percent from the field.
