2008-09 Matadors: The Awards

The men's basketball season was a resounding success. The Matadors won the Big West and qualified to the NCAA Tournament. For their efforts, which brought national attention to a little-known San Fernando Valley commuter school, we pay them recognition.

The Sunday drum circle at Griffith Park

Every Sunday there is a drum circle at Griffith Park near Crystal Springs Drive past the first sign directing guests towards the merry-go-round. People from all walks of life gather under large trees to play traditional African and Cuban drums such as congas, tom-tom drums, timbales, small percussion, cow bells, shakers and cabasas from noon until sundown.

Christine Leal, 28, has been playing the drums since she was 4-years-old. She said she especially enjoys drums because of 'the way they talk to each other.' To her, the instruments played back and forth become dialogue between drummers and their instruments.

Duplicitous plot, unambiguous good time

'Duplicity,' the most implausibly honest love story, exudes wit and charm while still imparting Gilroy's notorious third-act surprise.

Georg Buchner's 'Woyzeck' explores man's endurance and tests limits. CSUN's performance of 'Woyzeck' is a dark musical ballet, which comments on the nature of man, modern medicine and the effects of poverty. Director J'amie Morrison, takes us on an introspective ride into Woyzeck's psychosis.

Underground art helps the hidden

A Low Brow Art Show proved to be more than its name, a form of art that pokes fun at convention, would suggest. The show, held in CSUN's Grand Salon, attracted numerous visitors each of whom paid five dollars to gaze at the beautiful artwork created by local Chicano artists. The proceeds went to benefit undocumented students.

Matadors leave Royals hopeless

The No. 2 Matadors concluded their seven-match homestand on Saturday by sweeping Hope International 3-0. The sweep was the 12th in 22 games this season for the Matadors (19-3) and served as preparation for an upcoming road stretch.

The Cal State Northridge softball team (20-9) kept rolling Saturday afternoon as they swept Cal State Bakersfield in back-to-back games at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.' In game one, Debbie Duran '- once again '- pitched a complete game for the Matadors in a 10-5 victory.

Even though it wasn't noon yet the walls of the Pub were packed wall to wall with people. Despite it being hard to move the campus community was yelling and cheering in excitement for the men's basketball team as they played the first round in the NCAA Tournament.

There is a lot of rhetoric thrown around during the Associated Students presidential election.' Four sets of presidential/vice presidential pairs are campaigning for the highest elective office at CSUN.' A position that includes a $1,200 a month stipend, free tuition, a free faculty parking pass, an extensive executive travel budget and probably the most important, access to the most exclusive university officials and the ability to have your personal opinion heard by the University President, Jolene Koester.
