4.2 quake hits Los Angeles, 17 miles from CSUN

A magnitude-4.2 earthquake shook the Southland Thursday afternoon about 4 miles east-southeast of Newhall, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The first shake hit at 1:47 p.m., followed three minutes later by a magnitude 2.0-aftershock.

Students reported feeling the quake, along with Angelenos in Hollywood and Van Nuys, according to Facebook statuses.

Buildings in Los Angeles are built to withstand a quake of this magnitude, which could knock books off shelves and break windows, USGS geophysicist Jessica Sigala told ABCNews.com.
