The music department will present a concert filled with holiday-themed pieces and a sing-along to end the night.

Performing in the holiday concert are over 100 students participating with the CSUN Orchestra, CSUN Jazz A Band, CSUN Wind Ensemble and many more along with special guests.

“We always wanted to have a Christmas concert,” concert organizer Steven Thachuk said. “Every year we’ve done these department showcases that would feature faculty and students performing, but there wasn’t much cohesion in terms of us presenting a complete program. Holiday concerts are a really easy way to get people aligned to a certain theme.”

Anna Martone, 21, who has been playing flute for 14 years, said she knew from the start of the semester she would be performing in the concert as part of the Wind Ensemble and Northridge Flute Quartet.

“Personally, I love holiday concerts,” Martone said. “I think holiday music is full of such love, joy and a little bit of magic. I love playing and attending holiday concerts, it really helps to get me in the spirit of this time of year.”

Martone said she believes the holiday concert will be a great representation of CSUN’s music department and show everyone a taste of what it has to offer.

Alice Park, 19, music performance major, who has been playing flute and piccolo since she was 9 years old, said she will also be performing as a member of the Wind Ensemble and Flute Quartet.

“I really love what we’re playing in the concert,” Park said. “This isn’t the most difficult music, but a lot of it is really beautiful. I think it’s nice to be able to share that with the community through music.”

Most of the pieces the students and ensembles will perform traditional Christmas tunes like “Jingle Bells” and “Frosty the Snowman,” holiday hymns and variations on popular Christmas classics and carols.

“People around here take a lot of pride in CSUN and what it brings to the community,” Thachuk said. “And Christmas is about the idea of coming home, feeling loved and belonging.”

The holiday concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be in the Valley Performing Arts Center Great Hall.

Tickets can be purchased at the A.S. Ticket Office in the University Student Union for $15, $10 or $7 with student I.D. Doors open at 7 p.m.
