Matadors peaking at the right time

Now, with school back in session, many of you might be wondering what happened with the men’s basketball team over the winter break. Let’s just say this time the Matadors (7-10, 2-3 Big West) made sure to keep their blunders on the basketball court instead of in the court room (last New Year’s Day Best Buy scandal). In the seven games the Matadors played during the winter break, Bobby Braswell, who has been the head coach for 14 seasons, suffered… Read more

Seattle’s NBA prospect Garcia scores 34 but Northridge able to prevail to a 98-90 victory

There was a lot of buzz surrounding Charles Garcia and Seattle University visiting the Matadome on Monday night to face Cal State Northridge. Eight NBA teams sent scouts to see what the 6-foot-10 Garcia, who has been climbing up slots in the board of NBA prospects as of recently, is all about. The forward probably helped his status by putting up 34 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, but it came in a losing effort as the Matadors (5-10) snapped… Read more

Men’s Basketball: Physical Irvine team hands Northridge their seventh straight defeat

In the final seconds of Thursday’s Big West match between Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine, Matador Willie Galick was complaining to the officials about fouls not being called by pulling on his jersey repeatedly. Galick seemed to be taking out all his anger and frustration on his white home jersey, as the Matadors fell to the Anteaters 65-62. Northridge (4-10, 0-3 Big West) has now dropped seven games in a row–the worst losing streak for head coach Bobby Braswell’s… Read more

Men’s basketball off to a rocky start in Big West competition

The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team, losers of six straight, picked the wrong time to go on a slump. The Matadors’ (4-9) quest for another Big West title took a major blow after losing Monday night at UC Davis (6-8, 2-0 Big West), 85-73. The defending Big West champs are now 0-2 and have many problems to address. One of their issues is getting scoring production from seniors Kenny Daniels and Willie Galick. After Daniels erupted for a career-high… Read more

Men’s Basketball: Buffaloes overrun Matadors in Colorado, 92-58

The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team couldn’t have ended their pre-Big West schedule any worse than the 92-58 whopping they received from the University of Colorado (7-4), Tuesday at Coors Events Center. The 34-point rout matches head coach Bobby Braswell’s worst loss in his 14 years at CSUN (4-7). “We just were not very competitive tonight, and it’s very rare that I say that about a Northridge basketball team,” said Braswell, whose team has lost four straight games. “We… Read more

Men’s basketball unable to stop Drexel guards, as they fall 75-63

Cal State Northridge head coach Bobby Braswell said the perfect words to describe his team’s poor defense in a 75-63 loss against Drexel Friday night at the Matadome. “We played like our feet were stuck in cement all night.” The Matadors have now lost three games in a row and have given up an average of 84 points per game in that span. Not playing a game in 10 days could be a reason why the Matadors (4-6) played poor… Read more

Men’s basketball looks to end defensive struggles against Drexel

The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team (4-5) is coming off a 0-2 road trip where it played from behind thoroughly. The Matadors trailed for all but five minutes against Washington on Dec. 6 and were led from wire-to-wire at Denver two days later. It was the continuation of a trait CSUN’s been showing all season: starting slow. Thankfully for the Matadors and their head coach, Bobby Braswell, Northridge has also shown it can mount comebacks. “It’s not a bad… Read more

CSUN falls short against Denver

Lenny Daniel’s technical foul in the waning seconds of Tuesday night’s game defined Cal State Northridge’s performance against Denver. “(A) rookie mistake by a new player,” CSUN assistant coach Bob Lowe said in a post-game interview with Alan Zinsmeister. “Hopefully (Daniel) will learn from that.” A frustrated Northridge team ended their two-game road trip with an 89-82 loss to the Pioneers (6-2). With 2:41 left in regulation, Matador Willie Galick, who scored a game-high 20 points, made 1-of-2 free throws… Read more
