Snowe is the hope for the party of no

Senator Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, was the only Republican to vote for the Senate Finance Committee’s bill on health care. Could she be the hope for bipartisanship, and for the party of no? With its constant obstructionist votes, the Republican Party has become known as the party of no, rejecting every issue which President Obama has raised. In his quest for bi-partisanship he has been met with nothing but opposition from the Republican Party.  Suddenly, there is a breath of fresh… Read more

Hate and the Internet

A few weeks ago, the Sundial published a story about the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA), a student organization, which was the target of surveillance by the LAPD. The Sundial received over a hundred online responses to the story. Some were negative responses from critics of MEChA. Some were negative responses from supporters of MEChA toward the critics, but most were malicious and belligerent. It’s time for news organizations to review their online comment policies. Where is all this… Read more

The difference between Afghanistan and Vietnam

Many have speculated that Afghanistan could become this generation’s Vietnam, but it appears the outcome of the  war in Afghanistan will be much different than the Vietnam War. There are many similarities with Afghanistan and Vietnam, but there are many differences too. Our war with Afghanistan started soon after Sept. 11, 2001, when it was determined that the hijackers who flew into the twin towers of New York, the Pentagon and into the ground in southwestern Pennsylvania were all members… Read more

Back to the basics of civilty, an attempt at constructive discussion in politics

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, as President Obama was giving his health care address to both sessions of Congress, Congressman Joe Wilson, Republican from South Carolina,  shouted, “You lie,” when President Obama denied that health care legislation would provide free coverage for illegal aliens. Biology major, Dania Diaz, a 21-year-old senior at CSUN said, “I was in the bedroom studying, when I heard him say, ‘You lie.’ I was surprised. I would have expected it at a town hall meeting,… Read more

Free speech or hate speech?

A picture of President Obama with a Hitler-style mustache adorned a booth on campus during Greek Week. When asked how Obama compared with Hitler, the response was, “Read the literature.” The young adults manning the booth could not articulate the problem in their own words, but relied heavily on their printed materials. Asked if they were CSUN students, they responded with pride, “Oh no, we are working for the Lyndon LaRouche Political Action Committee.” Lyndon LaRouche, is an 87-year-old, self-proclaimed… Read more

Flu season brings extra worries of H1N1

“‘Be prepared, not scared,’ is the motto of the CSUN Klotz Student Health Center,” Dr. Yolanda Chassiakos, director of the Health Center, said in response to a question about the H1N1 swine flu. “We have a pandemic plan available consisting of three elements: prevention, safety through education and care,” she continued. “Every year viruses start in the Southern Hemisphere and then spread to the Northern Hemisphere. This year, it just happens to be seasonal flu (with) the addition of the… Read more
