A.S. Senate increases Homecoming budget

CSUN does not have a football team, but that has not stopped the Associated Students’ goal of “school spirit” from being generously funded.

At Tuesday’s meeting, A.S. senators approved an additional $6,500 for the homecoming week budget. The total homecoming purse, including the annual budget of $11,000, is now $17,500.

Vice President Sarah Jackson said the Homecoming committee has $7,000 to spend from their annual budget allocation. Jackson also stated in defense of the allocation that they initially petitioned for $30,000 in their annual budget and requested $16,000 specifically for Homecoming week.

Director of A.S. Finance Adam Haverstock prescribed caution to voting senators about allocating additional funds.

The CSUN Filipino American Student Association has hosted Pilipino Cultural Night for 21 years, and they requested funding from the Senate last week.

“Last week (senators) argued over $500 to FASA for PCN, which has been a proven successful event, then today they easily approved $6,500 for homecoming week,” Haverstock said after the Senate meeting.

FASA leader Kevin Laparan said A.S. allocated $3,500 to the event because of the budget crisis. Now that there is more money in the unallocated reserves account, Laparan said, “We’re meeting with A.S. Senate next week to renegotiate our allocation.”

“Usually the amount A.S. gives us doesn’t cover what we need so we do fundraisers and things like that,” Laparan said. “We just felt like (under) the circumstances that occurred we should have been getting a lot more, but with the crises with the A.S. budget they couldn’t give us anymore.”

Every spring, FASA presents a showcase of the talents of the Filipino community through dancing, acting and signing.

Meanwhile, in discussion of the Homecoming week allocation, Sen. Chante Felix questioned why the event required $2,500 for a movie night and an additional $4,000 for the rest of the week. In response, both Jackson and Sen. Joe Yomtoubian defended the motion.

Nine actions were approved during the meeting, including $3,000 for ASREC Sports’ Fit Fest, which is scheduled for April 11. During open forum, Miriam, a desk attendant at the Fitness Centre, thanked the Senate for allocating funding for the upcoming Fit Fest. The allocation partially gave funds for clothing, which included a pair of shorts Miriam was wearing that read, “Get Fit.” She said public response regarding the shorts was good, stating, “I already got a lot of honks this morning.”

Approved allocations totaled $14,800, with CSUN Chabad’s scheduled event for Purim being the only action not approved because it had already passed. The approved allocations leave the Senate with $22,870 in funds available for the rest of the semester.

Andrew LaFlamme, a CSU Student Trustee, gave a special presentation regarding the current collective bargaining process between the CFA and the CSU Board of Trustees. He said the CSU is currently under-funded by $500 million.

Enrique Galan spoke to the Senate in open forum regarding the senators’ stance on the CFA during the bargaining process.

“I don’t know what’s going on with A.S., but you need to analyze what’s going on with this on the inside,” Galan said. “Ask the chancellor or the Trustees, ‘What’s going on and what are you doing for us?'”

Part of the proposed plan includes fee increases of no more than 10 percent.

“These are two proposals focused on supporting faculty. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, where if you are supporting one, you’re not supporting faculty,” LaFlamme said.

Senator Igor Kagan, who headed the Committee for External Affairs, announced his resignation during open forum. Among his achievements was a proposal for a constitution for the Intercultural Council.
