Associate Students Finance Committee members voted expenses for 12 items ranging from student conferences to campus events on Monday.

Six thousand dollars was requested to replace a full floor of seven mats that were damaged during rainfall by the Spirit Squad, CSUN’s cheerleading team.

David Crandall, A.S. general manager, said during the discussion that the Spirit Squad is considered a sports club and that the finance committee should take into consideration athletes’ safety.

“Risk is always the biggest concern with sports clubs. We want people to be safe,” Crandall said.

Members of the finance committee voted 4-0-0 to recommend $4,000 to the Spirit Squad for replacement mats.

The Spirit Squad represents CSUN and athletics teams on campus. Their first performance this year is Oct. 20 for the basketball tip-off.

After two amendments to the main motion, the finance committee recommended $800 for the Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority event “Step to Cure” in a 4-1-0 vote.

Sigma Lambda Gamma requested funds for a fundraising event, the funds from which would be donated toward breast cancer research.

Last year, the event had a lucrative turnout with 200 attendees and $1,000 in donations. Sigma Lambda Gamma expects a larger turnout this year.

Seven performances are lined up for the event thus far, some of which would be from multicultural organizations.

Finance committee members also decided to recommend the full amount requested by a Central American Students organization for the College of Humanities International Film Festival.

The organization requested $2,200 from the committee for an all-day event, which would last from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on a Friday.

Last year, the event was very successful, as the Armer Theatre was filled to capacity with 350 people during the first four hours, committee members said.

Immigration, the main topic of the festival, would be featured in three of the 10 films that would be shown at the festival, which would be open to members of the community. Issues that affect Central American students would also be featured in the films.

To improve voter registration on campus, Associated Students President Adam Haverstock presented a request to the finance committee for more than $6,000 to fund a two-day barbecue on campus with free food and live music.

Scheduled for Oct. 23 and 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the event is designed to attract students to the area, where they’d be able to vote for governmental elections.

The finance committee voted 4-0-0 to allocate $2,500 to the Associated Students for the event.

An issue the finance committee had with specifics of the event was that they might not be able to register their target number of students, who might just attend the event for free food.

While value of the event would be crucial to the community, there are a lot of students who’d miss out on it because of night classes, the finance committee acknowledged.

Haverstock said A.S. wanted it to be a two-day event in order to “reach more students,” particularly the commuters. A.S. expects a total of 500 students to be served throughout the two days, Haverstock said.

E.J. Alford, a member of the finance committee and an A.S. senator, presented a request for funds for the Hollywood Nights Fashion Show in spring on behalf of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Alford said the event is one of the biggest on campus, and Alpha Phi Alpha requires funds for the facility charges and security.

Eight hundred dollars were recommended for the event for equipment, facility use and security guards by the finance committee, which voted 3-0-1.

Alford abstained from the vote. But during his presentation, Alford recommended that the finance committee not allocate funds for advertising and equipment because the fraternity should come up with the money on its own.

During Director of Finance Dave Knecht’s report, he said a new member would be appointed to the finance committee during today’s A.S. Senate meeting.

Knecht also said that Alexander Ross, an A.S. senator and member of the policies committee, would be presenting changes to the policies of the finance committee at their next meeting on Monday, Oct. 15.
