Matadors host Bakersfield for non-conference game tonight

The women’s volleyball team will take a break from Big West action tonight to play a non-conference match against Cal State Bakersfield at the Matadome. The match is the first of a four-game home stand for the Matadors.

CSUN has a 9-15 overall record going into the match, while the Roadrunners’ record is 6-17. The Matadors are currently sixth in the Big West standings.

Freshman Alex Johnson leads the team in kills with 215, followed by junior Val Kepler with 207 and freshman Brittany Williams with 196. Williams has a 2.61 kills per game percentage, while Johnson’s average is 2.42 and Kepler’s is 2.25. Junior setter Kayla Wright averages 6.18 assists per game and sophomore Angela Hupp averages 6.08.

Redshirt freshman middle blocker Lynda Morales has a team-high 109 block assists, followed by Kepler with 97.

The Roadrunners have had a rough go of it, playing Division I as independents and having lost eight of their last 10 matches.

Sarah Norman leads the team in kills with 381 and averages 4.70 kills per game, followed by Rosemary Stribling with 201 kills and an average of 2.64 per game.

“We’ve seen them a couple of times,” said head coach Jeff Stork. “They have hitters that are fairly potent. Anytime they have a player that can run up the numbers, you’ve got to be cautious and ready for them.”

Head coach John Price is a 1983 graduate of CSUN and former head coach of the CSUN men’s volleyball team.

Tonight’s match begins at 7:00.
