Elegant decay

Kristine Keller

The cumbling facades of the Historic Core district evoke a forgotten version of downtown Los Angeles. A century ago, fashionable Angelinos went to Broadway’s theatre district like New Yorkers do today, and what’s now known as the Old Bank District was once considered the “Wall Street of the West.” Today, structures from the turn of the century and the Art Deco era have become ghostly reminders of the past. Some are restored, some are left to nature, and others are in line for replacement.
