Matadors defeated by Trojans

The Cal State Northridge women’s water polo team became the 42nd straight victim at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium at USC. The Matadors, ranked 14th in the nation, lost to the No. 4 Trojans 12-4 on Saturday.

CSUN is now 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF conference. USC is 10-4 overall and 3-0 in MPSF play.

Cal State Northridge was limited to just one goal in each of the four periods of play. Dayna Van Gorder, Chelsea Curran, Allison Brookes and Renee Gargiulo each scored for the Matadors. Goalie Jillian Stapf recorded nine saves in goal.

For the Trojans, eight different players scored, led by sophomores Kally Lucas, Alexandra Kiss, Forel Davies and junior Jordan Anae who had two goals each. Sarah Van Norman, Michelle Stein, senior Julie Spataru and Alison Riddle each scored one goal. Sophomore goalie Tumua Anae made nine saves and redshirt junior Whitney Morgan saved two.

Cal State Northridge was able to keep the score close in the first period with USC leading 2-1. The Trojans scored three goals in the second period, while the Matadors scored just one, to end the half at 5-2.

USC came on strong in the third period, getting two more goals before the Matadors answered with their own goal. The Trojans scored three more in the last two minutes of the period to go up 10-2.

In the fourth period the Matadors scored first, but it was the final goal for CSUN. USC scored two more to end the game with a 12-4 win.

The Matadors return home Saturday for a noon game against Long Beach State.
