This summer is shaping up to be a great one for movies, with a lot of highly-anticipated blockbusters hitting theaters over the next few months.

Opening May 9 is “Speed Racer” directed by the Wachowski brothers, the guys behind the Matrix movies. The movie, based on the 1960s cartoon, is about a race car driver, Speed Racer, going up against a corrupt company while teaming up with his ex-rival Racer X to try to win a race that claimed his brother’s life. The action/adventure, science fiction/fantasy film promises incredible visuals and is rated PG.

Also opening May 9 is the romantic comedy “What Happens in Vegas?” starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. The two meet one drunken night in Las Vegas and get married before Kutcher’s character wins $3 million. The two fight each other for the money after being sentenced to “six months hard marriage” by a judge. The movie is rated PG-13 and judging by the trailer looks to be pretty funny.

After almost 20 years since the last crusade, Harrison Ford is back as everyone’s favorite archaeologist in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” With Steven Spielberg directing, Shia Labeouf starring as Indy’s new sidekick and Cate Blanchett as the villain the PG-13 flick promises lots of incredible action and plenty of laughs. It is unlikely fans will be disappointed when it opens on May 22.

The biggest chick flick of the summer “Sex and the City: The Movie,” opens May 30 and follows the four friends fans have been missing since the TV show ended four years ago. The R-rated comedy, drama and romance includes more men and martinis as well as a possible wedding, a pregnancy and the death of a major character.

In “The Incredible Hulk” scientist Bruce Banner, on the run from the military, turns into The Hulk whenever he gets angry and must learn to harness his anger to fight The Abomination. The film, adapted from the comic book series, stars Edward Norton and opens June 13.

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest project “The Happening,” starring Mark Wahlberg as a man trying to escape a global natural disaster, also opens June 13. Details about the creepy science fiction thriller are unknown but the trailer looks interesting enough to warrant checking the movie out.

Another comedy opening June 20, “The Love Guru,” stars Mike Myers as an American raised in India who later returns to be a self-help guru. The movie also features Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake and seems to have the same sense of humor fans of the “Austin Powers” movies will appreciate.

Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy star in “Wanted,” a film about a group of assassins with superhuman powers who take in an apathetic 25-year-old after his father is killed. The action crime thriller opens June 27.

Guillermo del Toro is directing “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” which follows the first film which debuted in 2004. Hellboy and his teammates try to prevent Hell on Earth in the suspenseful action thriller which opens July 11.

The new Batman movie “The Dark Knight,” opens July 18 and features Heath Ledger as the criminally insane Joker. The movie also replaces Katie Holmes with Maggie Gyllenhaal as the love interest Rachel Dawes. If the trailer is any indication, fans should not be disappointed by the action .

Six years after the end of the series, Scully and Mulder are back in “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.” The plot of the science fiction mystery is top secret and will probably be kept under wraps until the movie comes out on July 25.

“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” takes the film series out of Egypt and into the Far East on August 1. While Jet Li joins the cast and Brendan Fraser is back, Rachel Weisz is not. With the trailer not out yet it is unclear whether fans of the other mummy movies will appreciate the new one.

Judd Apatow’s latest project “Pineapple Express” starring Seth Rogen and James Franco is about a couple of stoners on the run from the police. With the comedic team behind “Superbad” this R-rated comedy should be worth seeing when it comes out on August 8.

“Star Wars: the Clone Wars,” chronicles the events that take place between “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith.” The force may not be strong with this animated sci-fi adventure when it comes out on August 15.

Whatever genre you’re into, there is something for everyone coming out this summer, and hopefully, movie-goers will not be disappointed by what they choose to spend $10.50 on to see in theaters. If you’re not sure a movie is worth the money read the reviews first and if all else fails wait until it comes out on DVD and rent it.
