Women’s soccer suffers a set of losses; still break records

After winning 10 out of its first 11 games, the CSUN women’s soccer team dropped four consecutive matches, taking the teams record to 10-5-0, and more importantly, into a tie with Pacific for fourth place in the Big West Conference.

The Matadors were beat by Pacific in a 2-1 nail-biter on Oct 14. Although CSUN lost the game, the Matadors managed a comeback as the team was playing down a player for just over 70 minutes of the match. Sophomore defender Julie Hauserman was issued a red card for a take down to the back of Pacific’s Bunny Dickson.

The Tigers were first to score in minute 35 as Catherine Betts headed in a rebound off the Matador crossbar for 1-0 lead.

The second Tiger goal came early in the second half as Dickson, the earlier recipient of the Hauserman red card foul, was again fouled, this time in the box by junior goalkeeper April Cline, resulting in a penalty kick for Pacific, which Dickson converted for a 2-0 advantage.

In minute 74, the Matador comeback began as sophomore Tryna Tafoya sent a ball past Tiger keeper Jaime Souza, lofting CSUN to within one goal of Pacific.

Regardless of outshooting the Tigers 11-8, the Matadors could not overcome the extra player advantage, losing 2-1. However, the Matadors managed to break both the single-season record for goals in a year, with 32, and points, with 91.

CSUN then traveled to UC Davis to take on the Aggies in a non-conference showdown. But the Aggies also proved to be too tough as the team got on the board just seven minutes into the match. CSUN evened the game on a Sara Davis header in minute 27, her third of the year.

With just nine minutes left before halftime, the Aggies would regain the lead as Dayna Dumont headed a ball past Cline for a 2-1 score. Shortly after the start of the second half, the Aggies scored again, this time on backup keeper senior Karen Comstock for a 3-1 lead.

In minute 66, senior Brianna Monka scored on a penalty kick, bringing the team within one. The Aggies were not finished as Katie Snyder launched a free kick from 40 yards out that beat Comstock to build the Aggies lead to 4-2.

Matador Casey Dodd managed to net a late goal in minute 89, bringing CSUN closer to Davis, but the Matadors ran out of opportunities as time expired and the game ended.

The Matadors return home to play their final two games at Matador Soccer field when they host Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara Oct. 21 and Oct. 23.
