The National Center of Deafness will host their 5th annual Sign n Run event on Sunday, April 15. The fundraiser will pull in proceeds for support services, scholarships and awards for deaf students.
Kayla La Bruno, the chairperson of the center and winner of Miss Deaf United States said the event will not only consist of fundraising, but it will be a fun occasion for the whole CSUN community.
“It is important for the CSUN community to come together and connect,” Bruno said. “The deaf, hearing, signers, non-signers, adults and children will learn and gain knowledge about the deaf culture. Students will also have the opportunity to watch great performance from many famous deaf performers and speakers, and participate in all the activities we will have and learn something new!”
The entire CSUN community will be able to participate in the Sign n Run events.
“We will provide t-shirts with our new 5th anniversary design and we will have different exhibitors with booths to advertise deaf companies such as ByMara, Deaf CSUNians and Purple,” Bruno said. “Also, we will have other activities such as the “kiddie” program, which will provide different children’s games, and face-painting.”
Additionally, the Sign n Run event will host a 5k marathon run. All participants are welcome to compete by choosing to run or walk.
“We will show the map of the 5K course at the event including volunteers, who will be at the 5K marathon to give water and supports,” Bruno said. “The course will be on CSUN campus and we will give awards and medals to the runners.”
Bruno said the deaf band, Rathskeller will also perform at the event and there will be drawings for raffles. Four free tickets will be given away and the prizes will include Disneyland and Dodgers tickets.
Bruno also added that Miss Deaf United States, Miss Deaf California, and Mr. Deaf CSUN will all give speeches, and food will be provided.
“We look forward to see people socializing, having fun and learning more about the deaf community through these events,” Bruno said.
