China Institute celebrates year of the dog at CSUN

The China Institute at CSUN celebrated the 2006 Chinese New Year March 11 with traditional Chinese music and cultural performances.

Justine Su, director of the China Institute at CSUN, opened the evening by welcoming everyone to celebrate the year of the dog, which began Jan. 29. She said there was significance is celebrating the New Year in the Chinese culture.

CSUN faculty, students, Chinese scholars and community members attended the celebration.

“In China, (New Years) is one of the traditions to celebrate with your family and friends,” Su said.

The China Institute celebrated the new year with the CSUN community because it is considered to be family with the China Institute, Su added.

Su provided an overview of the China Institute’s activities in 2005, which included having alliances with Chinese students and scholars at CSUN and in China.

One of the institute’s accomplishments Su said was sending Patric McInnis and Sean Hill, both students from the Theatre Department at CSUN, to study abroad at the Central Academy of Theatre Arts in Beijing, China.

Jolene Koester, CSUN president, attended the banquet and thanked everyone for attending the banquet.

Koester said the commitment to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the CSUN community on an annual basis is based on a long-standing relationship between the community and the China Institute.

Songkrant Sanglimsuwan, senior film and art major, was invited to celebrate the new year.

Sanglimsuwan received two scholarships to study in China for two years at Peking University to learn Chinese, he said. He said the experience of living in China was “wonderful (and) very different.”

Louis Rubino, professor of health sciences, presented the student delegation from the Health Sciences Department that traveled to China last summer.

The students then gave a short presentation on their experience of the trip.

Curtis Rost, health administration graduate student, said the trip to China was educational, and the delegation visited different faculties where they practice medicine.

He also said the trip to China was to experience and learn about the environment.

There were 12 CSUN students who participated in the delegation and traveled to China for a week to learn about China’s health administration.

“It was great, very educational,” Rost said about the week he spent in China visiting different medical centers.

During their visit to China the students visited several medical sites, hospitals and pharmacies, Rubino said. He said he will be taking another delegation this year.

The Chinese New Year was celebrated with traditional Chinese musical instruments performed by Jonathon and Annie Shi.

Shi played “Bird in the Shade,” a song interpretation of different bird sounds, such as hens, roosters, and other birds, he said.

Chinese scholars and visiting students from China performed “Great China.”
