The Cal State Northridge men’s and women’s track and field teams finished in second at the 2006 Cal-Nevada Championships at Fresno State’s Warmerdam Field from March 21 to April 1.

The women, who received 53 points from their throwers, totaled 122.5 points in the meet, only 59.5 points behind UCLA. CSUN beat host Fresno State by 10.5 points. The Matador men’s team finished with 105 points and trailed only UCLA but beat conference rival Cal State Fullerton by 10 points.

Raquel Sola won the hammer with a career-best 190-10 (58.17m) and Jere Summers won the shot put also posting a personal-best 50-2.75 (15.31m). Tatiana Crochet (173-7) was third in the hammer and Jessica Beach (172-6) was fourth. Also in the shot, Bobbie Patton was third with a personal-best 48-2.75 (14.70m). Summers completed the competition with a fourth-place showing in the discus as she threw 155-10 while Patton finished sixth (121-8) and Carrie Pon (119-9) was seventh in the javelin.

CSUN also scored well in the long jump as Kayli Sanders finished second with a leap of 19-0 (5.79m). Candyce Babb finished sixth (18-5.25), Brittany Ricketts was eighth (18-3.25) and Dominique Calvin finished ninth (18-2.25).

On the track, the team of Deanna Goodwin, Shauna Hackett and Calvin each scored in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. Hackett was second in the 100 meters (12.27) while Calvin finished fourth (12.49). Goodwin was second (24.63), Hackett fourth (25.04) and Calvin finished seventh (25.42) in the 200 meters. Goodwin finished second in a team season-best 55.64. In the 100 meter hurdles, La’Shana Verdon finished third in a season-best 62.92 and Jessica Gomez earned a point with a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters (2:23.44).

In the sprints on the men’s side, Anthony Brown finished with a second place showing in the 100 meters (10.78). Bradley Ike was fourth (10.96) while Ron Weatherspoon finished in seventh (11.11). Ike also took third in the 200 meters as he ran 22.04 and James Fredrickson finished in second in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 14.37. Everett Savoy, the lone Matador to reach the 400 meter final, ran a personal-best 48.08 to finish fourth. Fredrickson was also fourth in the 400 hurdles after clocking a 53.21. In the distance races, Daniel Clements was second (1:52.94) and Landen Llamas was seventh (1:55.15) in the 800 meters and Christian Haase finished fourth (3:55.49) in the 1,500 meters.

In the field events, Alex Marbley finished third in the high jump with a season-best 6-10.75 (2.10). Rolando Felizola scored 14 points after finishing second in the long jump (24-0.25) and fourth in the triple jump (48-7.50). Jonathan Moore’s eighth-place finish (21-11.75) in the long jump and Sean Jones’ 15-11 pole vault also scored for the Matador jumpers. Ryan Richards also finished eighth in the javelin with a season-best 185-3 (56.46m). The 4×400 relay team also ran a season-best 3:15.23 to finish third.

At the USC Trojan Invitational, Patton threw a distance of 47-0.75 (14.34m) in the shot put and finished third.

Pattons’ throw also qualified her for the NCAA Regionals.

“When I get to regionals I think that I’m going o do pretty well”, Patton said. “I’ve already beaten my personal record this weekend. I think that I’m going to end up doing very well overall.”

Brown also broke the CSUN record for the 110 meter hurdle and was able to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. There were four additional athletes that qualified posted for the NCAA Provisional qualifiers at USC held in Loker Stadium.

Brown finished in third with a career best of 13.92. His time broke Marquis Jones’ nine year standing record of 13.97.

“(I) was happy about breaking the school record,” Brown said. “But I could have gone faster.”

Brown additionally took third place in the 100 meters with a personal best time of 10.56.

Justin Johnson also qualified with a time of 14.92.

“I’m not really worried because I have a lot of time ahead of me,” Johnson said. “As the season winds down, me and my team are going to do very well.”

At the USC Trojan field events, Rolando Felizola qualified for NCAA was a mark of 24-5.5 (7.45m) in the long jump to finish in fourth place. Felizola also finished in fourth with a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 48-10.74 (14.90m).

There were equally impressive achievements from the women’s side. Patton finished in third place in the shot put while Jere Summers finished fourth. Summers threw 45-11.75 (14.01).

In the hammer Raquel Sola took fifth place with a throw of 189-7 (57.78M), a personal best and a qualifier. Jessica Beach finished in seventh (171-9), while Tatiana Crochet took eighth (171-6). Carrie Pon also had a mark of 120-11 (36.85m) in the javelin and ended up in ninth place.

“The whole team is coming along,” Stametz said. “The whole team is about where they’re supposed to be, except for the injuries. Unfortunately in Track and Field, injuries are just part of the sport. We’re cautiously optimistic.”
