Scoring frenzy leads Matadors past Idaho

The CSUN women’s soccer team scored early and often, beating the University of Idaho Vandals 7-2 at Matador Soccer Field on Sept. 12.

In a game where goal production came from six different CSUN players, forward Kristal Phillips led the Matadors with two goals and forward Tessa Binkley tied the school record for assists with three.

After one of the highest scoring games in the history of CSUN’s women’s soccer, head coach Keith West said that his offense has been playing like this all year long and producing these kinds of chances.

“The difference is we were not able to put goals in the net (before) West said. When we put goals in, we win.”

With this win, the Matadors have a record of 4-3, which West says could realistically be 6-1 instead.

“We dropped two games we shouldn’t have,” he said. “Our record doesn’t indicate how good we are.”

CSUN pummeled Idaho with 27 shots, compared to 13 by the Vandals. Although Vandals forward Jenny Springer made an early and aggressive move to the goal, Matador defender Sara Davis stopped her in her tracks. This put CSUN on an attack that resulted in midfielder Susie Mischenko scoring the Matadors’ first goal of the game with a header in the 18th minute. Midfielder Devon Nizich sent a corner kick deep into the box, where Mischenko connected for her first goal of this season.

Forward Carrie Faith Murphy scored in the 27th minute with an assist from forward Tessa Binkley. Binkley sent a pass out to Murphy, who drew the goalie out and then rolled the ball past her and into the goal.

Less than three minutes later, the Matadors scored again. Midfielder Kelley Ross sent Idaho goalie Michelle Jordan diving in an unsuccessful attempt to save her shot to the right corner. Ross’ goal came at 28:46 and was her first goal of her college career.

With just over two minutes left in the first half, midfielder Laura Nunes scored when she put the ball into the left corner of the goal, from the deep right side of the field.

The goal, which came after a pass from forward Farryn Townley, was Nunes’ first goal.

With a score of 4-0 at halftime, West said he told his players to keep playing the same way and not to change anything.

“Stay consistent and persistent and stick to the game plan,” West said.

The Matadors’ strong offense continued in the second half, again scoring early. Defender Julie Hauserman passed to Townley, who put the ball past Jordan and into the right corner.

Idaho was noticeably more aggressive in the second half, taking 11 of their 13 shots after halftime. A long shot by Idaho defender Morgan Bunday was saved by CSUN goalie April Cline. The Vandals would score their first goal of the season soon thereafter, with a shot from 30 yards out by forward Ashley Irish in the 74th minute.

The Matadors returned the favor, scoring again in the 76th minute. Binkley crossed the ball into the box where Phillips placed it in the net for her first goal of the game. Phillips would get her second goal at 83:47 with another assist from Binkley, as well as midfielder Evy Cedillo. With her back to the goal, Binkley received a pass from Cedillo, then turned and chipped the ball to Phillips, who scored the seventh and final CSUN goal in the game.

The Vandals scored their second goal in the 87th minute. Idaho midfielder Britta Rustad assisted on the goal scored by defender Sari Morrison. The goal came after CSUN goalie Cline had just made a save and was still on the ground when the ball popped loose in the box and Morrison put it in the net.

With just two weeks before conference play begins, West says he is happy with his team’s progression and he is excited about the season.

“I like our chances this year,” West said, speaking in regards to the fact that eleven players have scored so far this season. “We are deeper this year than we were last year. We have more quality this year than last year.”
