The CSUN swimming team kicked off their 2006-07 season with their annual alumni swim meet Oct. 7 at Matador Pool.

CSUN alumna Renee Locarnini proved that she still has it, winning all but one of her events. Locarnini, a member of the Matador swimming team in 2000, 2001 and 2002, is still active in swimming, both as a coach and competitor for the Southern California Aquatic Masters Swim Club. In the women’s competitions, she posted the best times in the 50-yard butterfly (27.80), the 50-yard backstroke (29.66), the 50-yard breaststroke (31.87) and the 50-yard freestyle (26.05).

In other women’s events, Stephanie Henderson won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.81. The 200-yard medley relay was won by the team of Melanie Cupitt, Robyn Johnson, Shannon Colavito and June Enich with a time of 1:55.80. The 100-yard individual medley was won by Sanda Jukic with a time of 1:03.61. The 200-yard freestyle relay was won in 1:45.27 by an alumni team of Lindsay Love, Ashley Hunhoff, Selin Bulbul, and Renee Locarnini.

In the men’s events, alumnus Cameron Fox won the 50-yard butterfly in 24.46. The 100-yard freestyle winner was Brian Sawyer at 49.46. The 200-yard medley relay team of Matt Sulkevich, Clark Henson, Chris Goodwin and Jeff Hart won the event with a time of 137.60. Alumnus Adam Beaton won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 25.24. Henson won the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 27.53 and the 50-yard freestyle winner was Jeff Hart with a time of 21.78. Matt Sulkevich won the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 56.03. The 200-yard freestyle relay was won by the team of Henson, Hart, Goodwin and Chris Ardoin at a time of 1:27.77.

Coach Barry Schreifels, who is entering his 14th season as head coach of the swimming team said that this was the largest turnout of alumni participating in the meet. Schreifels, surrounded by past and present team members, was enjoying himself at the meet and said it was fun for him to see people. Looking forward to the season, he said he is impressed with newcomers Shannon Colavito and Matt Oldenhage.

Schreifels said he is also enthusiastic about new assistant coach Erin Sieper, a three-time All American from the University of Arizona, where she graduated earlier this year. Schreifels said that Sieper will be terrific for the team and added that she has a very good and natural way of communicating with the swimmers.

Schreifels said that the alumni meet was fun, but he expects next week to be a test when the Matadors begin competition with a meet at University of Southern California Oct. 14.
