The CSUN men and women’s swim teams competed in their first meet of the 2006-07 season as they traveled to USC’s McDonald’s Swim Stadium, where both teams were defeated by identical scores of 86-7.

The Trojans, who finished fourth in the CSCAA rankings last season, dominated the Matadors in the meet. The USC men placed first in every competition while the women split first place finishes with Oregon State but still managed to come away with the win over the Beavers.

In the men’s competitions, CSUN finished the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:36.63. The Matadors team made up of Brett Grunert, Matt Oldenhage, Neil Ochotorena and Steven Woods finished five seconds behind the USC. The Trojans’ 200-yard medley team included an All-American with Olympic experience.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Matthew Sulkevich was the top CSUN swimmer placing fifth with a time of 1:46.95. USC’s Gergely Meezaros placed first in a time of 1:43.02. Three USC swimmers finished between Sulkevich and Meezaros.

In the men’s 200-yard breaststroke CSUN’s Stanley Baik finished seventh overall and recorded CSUN’s best time with a 2:08.61 finish. First place went to the Trojans’ Mishi Flaskay who finished five seconds ahead of Baik (2:03.26).

For the women, the 200-yard medley team of Olesya Senicheva, Robyn Johnson, Melanie Cupitt and Sanda Jukic completed the race in fifth (1:52.30), behind USC’s first place team which finished in 1:45.73.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the women placed fourth with a time of 3:41.84. Oregon State took the race finishing in a time of 3:31.73.

In the 100-yard butterfly competition Olesya Senicheva finished fifth (1:00.18). Oregon placed the top spot with Kayla Rawlings finishing in 56.56.

The women’s team will head to Idaho and Washington Oct. 20-21 to take on Washington State and Idaho. The men’s next competition will take place Nov. 3-4 when they compete in the Big West Shootout in Irvine.
