The nation’s best in track and field flocked towards Seattle, Wash. this past weekend to participate in the MPSF Indoor Championships, and CSUN was amongst the greatest of teams competing for the title of No. 1.

The meet was hosted at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoors and while UCLA claimed the No. 1 spot on the men’s side and Stanford took first for the women, CSUN rounded out the top 10 with the men placing eighth with 56 points and the women putting up 32.50 points and coming in ninth place.

The Matador men had a few shining moments in the competition, beginning on Friday when junior De’Shawn Waters took the second-place spot in the 200 meters. He also bolted a 6.88 time in the 60-meter run, which earned him fourth place in the event.

In the 4-by-400 meter relay, the Matador team comprised of senior Kevin Nious, juniors Nic Taylor and Adam Marvin’ and sophomore Eugene Sanchez finished in eighth place. However, they were able to walk away from the event with a season-best time of 3:17.64.’

Junior Robert Robinson claimed second place in the heptathlon with an NCAA Provisional qualifying score of 5,363 points. Another junior, Lance Gonzalez, also’ competed in this event and finished in sixth place with 5,065 points, which earned the team three extra points in the event.

The women’s team also put forth some season-bests in the championship meet. Junior Sherrina Lofton finished in fourth place with a 7.53 second-run in the 60-meter dash. In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Stella Dugall performed a lifetime-best of 8.81 seconds.

The women’s 4-by-400 relay team of sophomore Tara Prier, junior Shelese Ruffin, freshman Jamie Cox and Lofton clocked in a season-best 3:39.89, taking the third-place spot in the event. Their performance also obtained the NCAA Provisional qualifying time.

The team will’ compete in the NCAA Last Chance Meet on Saturday in Seattle, Wash.
