Former math student arrested in stabbing investigation

A recent CSUN math graduate has been arrested and is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for the alleged murder of his mother.’ John Soria, 23, is being charged with one count of murder, if convicted he faces 28 years to life in prison.

Soria, lived in Chatsworth where the incident occurred. His father and brother arrived at the scene and found Carmen Soria dead, according to a press release by the Los Angeles District Attorneys Office.

John was also found at the scene. The Los Angeles Fire Department had arrived at the scene first declaring Carmen dead.

‘There was no apparent reason for why he would have done what he did,’ said LAPD Detective Humberto Fajardo who has been in charge of this case.

‘He had no previous mental health issues or had ever had any previous criminal records,’ said Fajardo.

Outside their home on the curb was also John’s Toyota Rav 4 that appeared to be damaged but according to Fajardo, ‘the trucks state has nothing to do with the incident.”

Dr. Werner Horn, chair of the math department, remembered John who’ transferred to CSUN in Fall 2004 and took one of Horn’s 400 level math classes.’ Horn said John liked to take the difficult courses first despite not being qualified.

After having John as a student nearly four years ago Horn could not forget about him.

‘The reason I remember him is because he took the upper division class that he was clearly not prepared for. I was shocked to see him there but he didn’t do bad,’ said Horn.

In his class Horn remembers him just sitting in the back quietly. ‘He seemed to be a loner in some ways. No one probably knew him very well,’ said Horn.’

John has been arraigned at the San Fernando Superior Court is being held at the Van Nuys Jail. His bail is set at $1 million.
