Avesyan claims Big West Player of the Week

Matador freshman Nancy Avesyan was named the Big West Conference Co-Player of the Week Monday after scoring game-winning goals in both of Northridge’s wins this past weekend. She is the first Matador to win the honor since the 2005 season.

‘It feels great to win this award,’ Avesyan said. ‘The team played very hard this weekend in picking up these two victories. We continue to work hard for each other and it is always inspiring to see how hard everyone works.’

Avesyan scored the Matador’s first goal Friday against the UC Davis Aggies when she kicked in the ball after a saved shot bounced away from the Aggie keeper. The Matadors won 2-0, giving them their milestone 100th win.

‘It’s amazing,’ Avesyan said following the contest. ‘To be able to say I was apart of history here is an honor.’

Just two days later, she found the back of the net in the 88th minute to avoid overtime and lift Northridge to a 2-1 victory over the Pacific Tigers. The win evened up CSUN’s overall record at 7-7-1 and Big West’s record at 2-2-0.

For the season, Avesyan is tied with sophomore Farryn Townley for the team scoring lead with four goals. She also leads the squad in total points with 11.

Avesyan shared the honors with UC Santa Barbara’s Genelle Ives, who scored three goals and had an assist for the Guachos this weekend in a tie with Pacific and a win over Cal Poly.
