Matador Involvement Center fosters student involvement on campus

The Matador Involvement Center offers students a chance to participate in over 200 campus activities, helping them more involved at CSUN.

“(MIC has) been around for a full year and started as a place for students to get their paperwork taken care of, get advisement, gain leadership skills and a place where (students) can hang out,” said Jamison Keller, activities coordinator for student development and international programs.

Located next to the Fitness Center in the University Student Union, the MIC provides a hub where students can hang out, Keller said.

Students should take part in campus activities because it provides a variety of benefits, Keller said.

“(Students) can apply those skills, and it’s an opportunity to practice what they are learning in the classroom,” Keller said.

Inside the MIC, pictures of students in various clubs and organizations hang from the ceiling and are updated every semester.

On one wall, 21 awards the MIC has received are displayed.

The lounge area consists of computers, colorful couches, and filing cabinets that double as chairs for students to use.

Clubs and organizations can use computers and reserve the room, which holds up to 50 people.

Students can also use the leadership library where books, DVDs and CDs can be borrowed for up to two weeks, Keller said.

Clubs and organizations give information to the MIC, which helps distribute the information of upcoming events.

“I get the e-mails and they let you know which clubs and organizations are having events,” said Laketa Anderson, senior sociology major.

The center also offers a wide range of programs that students can participate in.

MIC offers a Student Development Transcript Program that aids students in planning activities, which are then recorded in transcript format.

The transcripts allow students to see their progression, which can benefit graduate school applications, Keller said.

With the MIC’s Leadership Institute, faculty and students can take workshops focusing on individual development, organizations, community and diversity.

Workshops are also offered in teleconferencing format, where students may call in.

The MIC is also sponsoring a Matathon, CSUN’s first dance marathon. The fundraiser helps support local community schools. Students can volunteer to take part in various Matathon committees, ranging from entertainment to fundraising.

Information on becoming an orientation leader, a dorm resident adviser, as well as information on joining a sorority or fraternity, is widely available.

Going to class and going straight home is not what college is about, Keller said.

“They’re not getting the most (out) of their education,” Keller said.

“I’m on Associated Students, and we get priority registration,” said Weena Laoharangsima, senior biology major. “You feel like you’re not just a student.”

Participating in campus activities “builds more pride in the university, keeps (students) in school and offers networking opportunities with faculty and staff including outside agencies,” Keller said.
