I watched the proverbial sunrise coming up over the Pacific” is how Relient K opened their set Saturday night to a sold-out show at the Avalon in Hollywood, with their song “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been.”

The band has been wrapping up the monthlong “Be My Valentour,” which is in full support of their album, “Mmhmm,” which was released last fall. The “Be My Valentour” also included bands Mae and Name Taken.

Relient K formed in Ohio, when two of the members started playing guitar for their church’s high school youth group. In 2000, when they released their first album, they started making their impact on the contemporary Christian music scene.

More than four years and three albums later, they are back again, still mixing the infectious and somewhat silly lyrics, but this time with a more serious side in their belief of God and issues people face every day.

Relient K set started out on a bit of a serious note, with their song “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been,” and continued with the same intensity with songs like “Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet?” which is a love song in a sense. The song poses situations where we do not necessarily like a person but we love them anyway with lyrics like “No, I don’t hate you/Don’t want to fight you/know I’ll always love you/but right now I just don’t like you/know I don’t hate you/don’t want to fight you/know I’ll always love you/but right now I just don’t like you/cause you took this too far.”

Later they played a set of some of their more humorous songs and a few of their older songs, such as “In Love With the 80s,” where Matt Thiessen sings about pink tuxedos and falling in love with the 80s. “I’m only gonna pierce my left ear/and I’ve been working on this mustache all summer long/ and my favorite band will always be Tears for Fears/and I’m gonna wear a pink tux to the prom, a pink tux to the prom,” Thiessen sung. In their classic and probably one of their most famous songs, “Sadie Hawkins Dance,” he sang about girls asking guys to the upcoming school dance.

Overall the show was great from start to finish. The opening act, “Name Taken,” shows great promise for the future.

Mae has already made an impact on the music industry with their mellow yet melodic rock and great lyrics in their first album, “Destination: Beautiful,” and their second album “Destination: B-Sides,” which have a combination of unreleased songs and mixes.

They also played some of their songs from their new album, “Everglow,” due out on March 29th. Relient K’s set was full of non-stop rock songs, playing a lot of songs from their new album “Mmhmm,” which steps up the level in maturity of their writing, but continues with the same infectious lyrics, and the perfect mixture of humor and seriousness in talking about their faith and belief in God.
