The California State University, Northridge men’s golf team finished in seventh place with a combined score of 870 at the Pacific Invitational held at Brookside Country Club in Stockton on Nov. 6-8.

The Matadors started off strong in the first round, but fell three spots by the end of the tournament. After the first round of play, the Matadors placed fourth with a team score of 284. At the end of the second round, the Matadors fell two spots back into sixth place with a score of 291. By the end of the final round, CSUN dropped another spot back to finish off at seventh place with a score of 295.

Brigham Young University placed three golfers in the top five and claimed the top spot with a total score of 830. Charlotte finished second, twelve strokes behind BYU with an 841 and Big West Conference opponent UC Santa Barbara finished third with a score of 852.

In individual performances, junior Aaron Hobbs had the best overall performance for the Matadors. Hobbs finished in a tie for fourth place after shooting a four under par in the first round. Hobbs followed up his first round performance by shooting two under par in the second round and one under par in the final round to finish off the tournament seven under par (209). His 209 performance put him in a tie for fifth place.

Freshman Jeff Freund finished in a tie for 27th place with a final score of 218, two above par. Freund’s best round came in the second, when he shot a 70. Freund shot scores of 75 and 73 in the first and third rounds.

Senior Joe Lopez finished two strokes behind Freund with a score of 220 to place him in 34th. Lopez started strong, shooting a 70 in the first round, but evened out his score to par at the end of the second round, shooting a 74. Lopez finished the final day of competition with a 76.

Senior Luis Kim tied for 48th place with a 227 score. Kim was unable to get under par in any of the rounds. He shot for scores of 75, 77 and 75.

Sophomore Dean Tonneslan scored 21 over par to finish the tournament in 55th place. Tonneslan scored a one under par in the first round, placing him in a tie for 20th place, but struggled in the following two rounds. An 82 in the second and an 84 in the third dropped him down in the ranks.

BYU’s Clay Ogden finished in the top spot with a final score of 204, twelve under par. Also from BYU, Daniel Summerhays and Robbie Fillmore placed second and fourth with scores of 205 and 208, respectively.

UC Irvine’s John Chin placed third with a 10 under par finish.

UC Santa Barbara’s best performance came from Ryan Keefe, who finished in seventh place. Keefe shot a six under par.
