Distribution
We are looking for early risers who want a little extra pocket money!
The team will work together to deliver the weekly print newspaper Wednesdays beginning at 6 a.m. and ensure that the campus has the best access to The Sundial. Team members will load papers and use a utility cart to get stacks of papers to the distribution boxes. The position requires the ability to lift as much as 50 pounds and move around campus pushing a loaded cart.
The distribution team will generally work one day per week for approximately three hours, but will occasionally need to distribute an extra edition of the paper on a different day. Extra hours may also be available for special projects. All majors & class levels are welcome to apply.
Managing Editor
Assists in overseeing editors with content editing. Will also work closely with the EIC in overseeing the production of content and help communicate any issues or concerns from reporters and editors.
News Editor
Publishes immediate, thorough coverage of daily news and breaking news. Will possess good news judgement and a strong sense of immediacy. Will also oversee Assistant News Editor(s) and ensure they are producing content.
Assistant News Editor
Assists the News Editor with coverage of news and/or breaking news. Assists in developing creative ideas for our multimedia platforms. Works alongside reporters and assists them with their beats. The Assistant News Editor will work closely with the News Editor with any content editing as well as provide the weekly or daily needs of the news section. This includes writing stories and/or furniture for the print edition and website.
Sports Editor
Oversees sports coverage of CSUN athletic beats, features, and sports news. The Sports Editor will ensure that there is a representation of all CSUN sports teams in the publication. He or she will also maintain a strong connection with other university publications covering away games. Will also oversee Assistant Sports Editor(s) and ensure they are producing content.
Assistant Sports Editor
Assists the Sports Editor with sports coverage, CSUN athletic beats, features, and sports news. Will also work alongside reporters and assist them with their beats. The Assistant Sports Editor will help with any content editing as well as provide the weekly or daily needs of the sports section. This includes writing stories and/or furniture for the print edition and website.
Opinions Editor
Publishes content which features unique perspectives and strong, thought-provoking content from voices in the CSUN community. Will also write objectively, engage the campus community, and have a strong ethical background. The Opinions Editor will look for guest columnists and contributing opinion writers. Will also work with the Illustrator in providing a visual element for the opinion stories.
Arts & Entertainment Editor (A&E Editor)
Maintains a web and newspaper presence covering all aspects of music, arts, food, and entertainment, and publish captivating features. The A&E Editor will also lead his or her section by ensuring that Assistant A&E Editor(s) are communicating the needs of the section.
Assistant Arts & Entertainment Editor (Asst. A&E Editor)
Assists the A&E Editor in ensuring the reporters are covering their beats and producing content. The Assistant A&E Editor will help with any content editing as well as provide the weekly or daily needs of the section. These needs range from the weekly furniture to writing stories that will be submitted to the print edition or website.
Visual Managing Editor
Oversees the style and all visual elements of the website and print product. The Visual Managing Editor will oversee that the Illustrator, Photo, and Video Editors produce content. Will also assist the Production Managing Editor in deciding the visual elements for print, and the Photo Editor in overseeing the photographers. He or she will also seek out photographers to contribute to The Sundial, and also give them access to Camayak once the EIC provides the ethics test.
Photo Editor
Oversees and manages all photography for the print edition and website. Will assist the Visual Managing Editor in overseeing the photographers. Will also assist the Visual Managing Editor in deciding the visual elements for the website and print editions. The visual elements include photo essays or everyday photo needs for story assignments. The Photo Editor will also ensure that all photos contain photo credit and two-sentence captions that include what is happening in the photo and where it was taken.
Video Editor
Produces weekly videos covering topics of interest to the CSUN community. Video formats will range from documentaries to man on the street, such as “Are You Aware?”.
Chief Copy Editor
Copy edits all content for publication in AP style format. The Chief Copy Editor will be responsible for ensuring that all photo captions and stories — including headlines, teasers, and body text — meet AP Style standards. He or she will also be final eyes on all content being published online and in the print edition. The Chief Copy Editor will also lead a team of Copy Editors in ensuring that all content moves through the copy desk effectively.
Copy Editor
Assists the Chief Copy Editor in the editing process of all content in the publication. Copy Editors will also assist in headline editing, caption editing, and the print edition. Copy Editors will follow the structure and writing style of the Chief Copy Editor and the publication.
Production Managing Editor
Oversees the print production team and helps desk editors pull content for the newspaper. The Production Managing Editor will sketch out and help design the layout of the pages, as well as read and edit content for the print product.
Engagement Editor
Oversees recruitment throughout the semester. Will work with contributors and keep all editors up to date with training, as well as brainstorm ideas on how to get more viewers to our site and/or social media. The Engagement Editor will be working alongside the Social Media Coordinator.
Audio Producer
Produces 1-3 regular audio programs on The Sundial website, including podcasts or audio stories. Will have experience editing audio and posting online, and will have strong social media skills. The Audio Producer decides all content in a program with the guidance of the EIC.
