Chess club wins against master players

The Matador Chess Club placed second in the U-1800 section during the 25th Annual Amateur Team West tournament Feb. 15-16. The Northridge representatives went up against some of the better chess players in the world. Jeffrey Cohen, CSUN's highest-ranked player, is considered "expert" according to the United States Chess Federation's national ranking system.

Fullerton blew out the Matadors (20-10 overall) in the first half and Northridge was never able to recover as the Titans (23-8) easily handled them and won 83-68 in the Big West Conference tournament semifinals at the Anaheim Convention Center on March 14, ending the Matadors' season and any hope they had of reaching the NCAA tournament.

Northridge guard Josh Jenkins saw himself as the rebel teenager in the men's basketball team family. He saw head coach Bobby Braswell as the fatherly figure he disagreed with occasionally. Luckily, Braswell had three assistant coaches to help him take care of family business, allowing him to keep Jenkins and his locker room brothers from running away from home.

Alex Harris and the Gauchos shrugged off a 25-point effort from the Northridge star reserve, held off a small rally and led all the way enroute to a surprisingly-comfortable 77-66 victory over the Matadors Thursday night at the Matadome.

Jonathan Heard, Northridge's senior team captain, couldn't help but smile when asked about the Matadors' next two matches, home dates against Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.
