Before the smoke cleared

The sun seemed to set early Oct. 21. Blue sky was nowhere to be seen in the Santa Clarita Valley that day. Very little could be seen past the thick cloud of smoke from the fires that have combed over Southern California. The Santa Ana winds had displayed their strength the entire weekend.

Matadors lose home opener against UCSD

The Matadors lost their opening home game 8-5 to division rival UC San Diego at Valley Ice Center Saturday. The loss drops the Matadors ice hockey team to a record of 2-1 in division play. The loss at home follows the same pattern as last season, when CSUN and UCSD both won games on the opposing team's home ice.

Sexual Battery, Rape Reported

Sexual battery was reported as having been committed against a CSUN student late Friday night on the first floor of the G-9 parking structure, a university police department crime alert shows. And an unknown suspect was arrested for the rape of a student, which was reported as having been committed on Sept.

Matadors win one, lose one

The Matadors ice hockey team split a two game road-trip last week by losing to San Jose State 12-2 on Friday, but then beating Fresno State 8-2 on Saturday. The Spartans looked to be a tough opponent going into Friday's game because they compete in the more competitive Division 2, while the Matadors are in Division 3.

Matadors beat Bulldogs 16-2 in season opener

The CSUN Matadors ice hockey team opened their '07-'08 season on the road with a win over the University of Redlands Bulldogs Saturday. Every team wants to start of their season with a win and the Matadors did it in dominating fashion, outscoring the Bulldogs 16-2.

BSU members wear black to support Jena 6

A rally to help spread awareness of the Jena 6 teens was held in front of the Oviatt Library Thursday. The Black Student Union, all of whom wore black as part of the protest, held the rally to help spread awareness for the case of Mychal Bell. Members informed any person passing by who stopped to listen about Bell's case, who is one of the Jena 6.

Award winning film director Amir Bar-Lev has a new documentary set for limited release in Los Angeles and New York Oct 5. "My Kid Could Paint That" is a documentary about the Olmstead family, and what makes the family noteworthy is their young daughter.

Proposed new lighting system could save energy, costs

A plan is currently in the works to remotely control campus lighting using power lines already in two parking structures to save energy and costs. The cost of installing remotes into the B3 and B5 parking structures would be more than $110,000. The money saved from the retrofit lighting would be more that $37,000 per year.

Professors, students speak out about U.S. Constitution

CSUN held an event to celebrate and discuss Constitution Day at the Sierra Center on Saturday to help inform people about the U.S. Constitution. Among those in attendance who were asked to devote more thought to the purpose of the Constitution were CSUN students, faculty members and instructors from other schools.

Imagine the arts on campus in ’09

Construction is scheduled to begin this academic year for the Imagine the Arts Center project, which received $2.5 million this summer toward its $100 million price tag from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. "I've studied the drawings, and I can say without hesitation that there's very little this center can't do," said Ralph Hoskins, executive director of the performing arts center project, which will break ground east of Cypress Hall, near the corner of Nordhoff and Lindley avenues.

Hockey anyone?

CSUN has a hockey team? asked recent graduate Aaron Davitian. And he was probably wasn't the only person who was shocked to hear that information. But despite being unknown by some of the student body, the team is strong. The Matadors finished the '06-'07 season with a 13-7 record and placed fifth in the Division 3 Pacific region.

CSUN among top in nation for minorities

CSUN's strive for education has earned it a rank among the top schools in the country in awarding degrees to minority students. Diverse Issues in Higher Education magazine ranks all colleges and universities in the United States for degrees awarded to minority students every year.
