Partial closure of Etiwanda Avenue not beneficial

When people see the partial closing of Etiwanda Avenue, between Halsted and Plummer streets, reactions that have most likely come up in their minds are: "Why was this section Etiwanda cut off? And who in the world decided to permanently close it off?" It was the community, specifically several community members living along Etiwanda Avenue, who voiced their concerns and ultimately influenced Facilities and Planning at CSUN to close part of the street.

A.S. Senate votes unanimously, Athletics gets $30,000 allocation

Daily Sundial The Associated Students Senate voted unanimously to allocate $30,000 in Grants-In-Aids Jan. 21 to the Athletics Department. "We can't say enough how much their financial support means to us," said Janet Pinneau, assistant athletics director for Student Affairs.

Financial Aid warns CSUN students of grant scam

Daily Sundial Financial Aid and Scholarships recently issued a scam alert about possible fraudulent activity associated with a firm called Advantage America that allegedly claims to give away government grants to college students. The department advised students in late January not to give away personal information to anyone claiming to be from Advantage America.

Black History Month ceremony honors icons, influential figures

Daily Sundial The Black History Month opening ceremony took place in front of the Matador Bookstore yesterday, featuring a memorial for the famous and influential African Americans who passed away last year. The deceased were honored with libation, an old African tradition of pouring out wine or oil on the ground is a sign of paying respect to the dead.

Game over, arcade

Daily Sundial The Starcade Arcade, a longtime source of gaming relief for CSUN students at the Matador Bookstore Complex, has been closed and replaced by an addition to the bookstore. The University Corporation, which oversees commercial services, saw an opportunity to provide the Matador Bookstore with much needed additional space, said Dave Nirenberg, director of commercial services for the corporation.

Faculty, students voice concerns at CFA rally

Daily Sundial LONG BEACH - Faculty and students from several CSUs made speeches and expressed their concerns about budget cuts, and low-paid faculty salaries at the Board of Trustees meeting Feb. 1. Over 100 people, including members of the California Faculty Association, attended the rally.

Gov. Schwarzenegger proposes student fee freeze

Daily Sundial There is hope for students who have a hard time paying for tuition at CSUN. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed to eliminate the scheduled 8 percent fee hike for students at the University of California and California State University campuses for the 2006-2007 year.

After 30 years on job, Dorena Knepper retires

Daily Sundial Dorena Knepper, longtime CSUN director of governmental affairs, began her retirement on Dec. 31, 2005 after working at the university for more than 30 years. Knepper's job took her from Sacramento all the way to Washington, D.C., lobbying lawmakers to improve the lives of students.

No hate crimes at CSUN, several in Northridge

Daily Sundial No hate crimes were reported at CSUN in 2005, according to Joy McConnell, records administrator for the CSUN Police Department. The lack of hate reports is in contrast to hate crimes that have taken place in Northridge and the surrounding San Fernando Valley.
